What is Production Animal Science?
Animal Production science is about the sciences (such as animal behaviour, microbiology, anatomy and physiology, biochemistry, health, genetics and reproduction) underpinning animal production. Students learn how to use the latest technologies and businessprinciples, and how to apply these in animal husbandry programs to ensure profitable and sustainable animal production.
Careers in Production Animal Science
Management of production animal enterprises (grazing beef, feedlots, dairy, sheep, poultry and pigs), stockman on live export vessels, extension and animal welfare officers with government departments, research scientists with government departments, CSIRO and universities, inspectors within AQIS and customs, managers and technical officers with allied industries such as feed milling, stock equipment manufacturers and animal health companies.
The Bachelor of Applied Science will provide you with a broad background in basic sciences. The degree offers a flexible three year program with a diverse range of specialisations, depending on your career aspirations, making it possible to enter into a wide range of industries.
Production Animal Science extended major
The Production Animal Science extended major is ideal if you want to establish a career in any of the commercial animal industries, whether it is beef, wool, dairy, pig or poultry, and associated allied industries. You will gain a good understanding of the sciences that underpin animal production and will also develop your ability to apply the latest technologies and business principles to ensure economic, social and environmental sustainable animal industries.
You will study a range of areas including animal behaviour, microbiology, anatomy and physiology, biochemistry, animal health, genetics, reproduction and nutrition.
Program Highlights
The focus of this program is on the science and practice of animal production in Australia as a basis for animal management and husbandry; theory is backed up by practical experience with the livestock facilities on campus and field trips to commercial dairies and feedlots.Dual Degree Opportunities
