What is Sustainable Enterprise Management?
To be successful, modern businesses must not only achieve targeted levels of profitability and competitiveness, they must also demonstrate environmental and social responsibility in the way they operate. Sustainable Enterprise Management is about how the dual needs of profitability and sustainability can be achieved compatibly.
Some of the greatest challenges facing Australian and international businesses fall into the category of Sustainable Enterprise Management. Significant challenges include issues like the increasing price of fossil fuel, climate change and diminishing natural resources. These challenges are evolving in an already complex environment where staying internationally competitive requires great skill and expertise. But there are also immense opportunities and with Sustainable Enterprise Management comes exciting solutions such as new markets for environmentally sustainable products, improved business development techniques and better relationships between business and society.
To meet these challenges and take advantage of the opportunities, Australian businesses need graduates who not only have the traditional skills that come with a standard Bachelor of Business program, but also the leading edge and innovative experiences that graduates acquire by undertaking the UQ Bachelor of Business (Sustainable Enterprise Management) program.

Program outline
The SEM Program aims to produce graduates with an understanding of how businesses can be competitive and profitable while at the same time demonstrating environmental and social responsibility. Students will build their knowledge of environmental management, corporate governance and responsibility, finance and environmental markets (including carbon trading), clean technology (e.g. renewable energy) and systems thinking, on a core of business courses. They will also be able to choose electives that focus on business, production, environmental or social issues.
Program highlights
The SEM Program is supported by UQ’s SMART program. SMART (Sustainable Management Alliance in Research and Teaching) is a collaborative partnership initiated by UQ to bring together some of Queensland’s leading business people, with the ultimate goal of informing and enhancing innovative research and industry guided teaching in the field of sustainable enterprise management. SMART’s partners include companies such as Billabong, RACQ, Freedom Fuels and Queensland Rail. SMART also offers SEM students the opportunity to participate in paid internships.
Dual program opportunities
Dual programs enable you to study two complete programs at the same time, significantly reducing the time it would take to complete two programs one after the other. There are a number of dual program possibilities with the Bachelor of Business (Sustainable Enterprise Management) program and we encourage prospective students to contact the program’s academic advisor for more information.
