Australian Veterans’ Children Assistance Trust

Scholarships and Grants for 2010

The Australian Veterans' Children Assistance Trust is an independent organization sponsored by the principal Australian ex-service associations. It was established in 2003 by the former Vietnam Veterans Trust, as a lasting legacy from Australia's use of the Agent Orange Funds.

The role of AVCAT is to help the disadvantaged children and grandchildren of those who have served this country in peace and war in the Australian Army, Navy and Air Force. AVCAT administers bursaries and scholarships that help those children of the veteran community with the costs of tertiary education.

The bursaries and scholarships are funded by direct donations to AVCAT and from the Australian Government, ex-service organisations, firms and private individuals sponsoring scholarships.

Animal Studies Honours Scholarships

Three honours scholarships each valued at $5,000 are available for students commencing Semester 1, 2010 for research projects within the School of Animal Studies. The scholarship will be awarded to the student and there is no obligation to spend the funds on project costs.

General criteria for assessing applications will include:

  • Academic record; 
  • Research project; 
  • Other evidence of research support.

Applicants will need to contact a School of Animal Studies academic to discuss the feasibility of an appropriate research project and to request the academic's involvement as an approved honours project supervisor.

The Dr John Gibb Memorial Biosecurity Prize

For students enrolled in a program of the Faculty of Natural Resources, Agriculture and Veterinary Science in the final year of a four year or five year bachelors degree; or honours program after having completed a three year bachelor program at this or another university. Applicants must be enrolled in one of the following disciplines; agriculture, horticulture, veterinary science, animal studies, environmental science, environmental management, food technology, food science and nutrition or a dual program of any of the above.

Students should submit an application identifying at least 6 units of courses containing a Biosecurity component, or an Honours project in the area of Biosecurity in a discipline listed above. The selection committee may choose to interview short-listed candidates.
 

  • The prize consists of a medal and $1, 500.
  • Applications close on 24 November 2009.

 

Angus Baxter Fund Bursary

Provides financial assistance to students in the second, third or fourth years of a bachelors degree program administered by the Faculty of Natural Resources, Agriculture and Veterinary Science (NRAVS) who, because of their financial circumstances, may otherwise be unable to complete their studies.

This bursary is awarded based on income from the original bequest which changes from year to year. As a guide the bursary was $4,525 in 2008 and $4780.70 for 2009.

 

The Australian Agricultural Company (AAco)

The AAco Scholarship aims to give students studying a relevant program through NRAVS exposure to and experience within the Australian cattle industry, particularly within the scope of the company’s operations.

In addition to the monetary contribution toward their studies ($5,000), AAco is also offering the successful applicant employment within the company’s operations for one (1) year following graduation (acceptance of the employment offer will form part of the conditions of acceptance for the scholarship).

  • Value: $5,000 towards academic expenses (fees, textbooks and other expenses) and One (1) Year Employment with AAco upon successful completion of study

Gatton Campus Scholarships/Bursaries

The UQ Gatton Past Students Association Scholarship

Open to full-time students commencing the first year of a program administered by UQ Gatton who, because of financial, personal or home circumstances might otherwise be unable to enter full-time study. Selection based on academic achievement in secondary school studies; and the financial, personal or home circumstances that could impede academic progress.

  • Value: $5,000 per year for the normal duration of the student’s program, conditional on maintaining a GPA of at least 4 in each semester and remaining enrolled as a full-time student

  • Apply: Faculty of Natural Resources, Agriculture and Veterinary Science

  • This scholarship is now available for 2010. Applications close 30 April 2010.

 

Agricultural Science

The Slade Scholarship

Available to students who have completed second year requirements of the Bachelor of Agricultural Science and are about to enter the third year of the program. The student’s academic performance in the second year will be taken into account when awarding this scholarship.

This bursary is awarded based on income from the original bequest which changes from year to year.  Awarded on merit, application is not necessary. Value for 2009: $468.94

 

Ivor A Gill Memorial Scholarship in Agricultural Science

For a postgraduate or undergraduate student engaged in studies calculated to lead to an increase in the productivity of Australia’s pastoral industries, who in the opinion of the Executive Dean, requires financial assistance towards undertaking their studies.

This scholarship is awarded based on income from the original bequest which changes from year to year. As a guide the bursary was $3,240 in 2008 and $3422.28 for 2009.

 

A F Bell & W W Bryan Medals

The Bell Medal is awarded for a superior research project conducted as part of the BAgrSc (4 year) degree at St Lucia or Gatton campus, while the Bryan Medal is for a superior research project in the Honours year after a 3 year degree conducted at Gatton or St Lucia campus in any field of study in the BAppSc (Hons) program.

Food Technology/Rural Technology

James and Everingham Bursary

For students enrolled in programs relating to food technology or rural technology at UQ Gatton. Awarded on basis of academic achievement and financial need.

This scholarship is awarded based on income from the original bequest which changes from year to year. As a guide the bursary was $470 in 2008 and $499.64 for 2009.

Applied Science

A F Bell & W W Bryan Medals

The Bell Medal is awarded for a superior research project conducted as part of the BAgrSc (4 year) degree at St Lucia or Gatton campus, while the Bryan Medal is for a superior research project in the Honours year after a 3 year degree conducted at Gatton or St Lucia campus in any field of study in the BAppSc (Hons) program.

To be eligible students must submit three (3) copies of their project to the Student Centre, NW Briton Building Annexe, and Gatton Campus. 

  • Applications usually close at the end October.    

 

Veterinary Science

Duncan Kemp Prize

For students entering fifth year of the Veterinary Science program who submit an application which includes evidence of having lived and worked on an animal-based farm or property for a minimum period of two years. Awarded to the applicant with highest aggregate marks in VETS4011 in the previous year.

Value: This prize is approximately $500.

 

James Conway Langdon Scholarship in Veterinary Science

For first year Veterinary Science students. Based on academic achievement and financial need.

The School of Veterinary Science will notify students via email regarding the application process for this scholarship. The value varies each year, but is approximately $500 per year for duration of program subject to satisfactory progress.

Miriam E Wippell Undergraduate Scholarships

Two scholarships are awarded each year to students enrolling in tertiary studies for the first time, in the Bachelor of Veterinary Science. The selection committee must consider the applicant’s school assessments and any other information provided by the applicants which it decides is relevant.

The School of Veterinary Science will notify students via email regarding the application process for this prize.

Value: $350 per annum for five years

Environment

Queensland Department of Natural Resources and Water (DNRW) Scholarship Program

The DNRW offers scholarships to continuing university students interested in working for the department.

UQ Murray Darling Basin Landcare Scholarships for students to undertake industrial placement

The scholarships were established in 2002 and maintained by an annual gift of $3000 from the Queensland Murray Darling Committee (QMDC) to encourage study and work in environmental, landcare and catchment management within the Queensland Murray Darling Basin.

Two scholarships are awarded each year. They are worth $1,500 each for third and fourth years of the program.

Candidates must be enrolled full-time in the third year of the Bachelor of Environmental Management - Natural Systems and Wildlife Management or in the Bachelor of Agricultural Science.

Industry/General Scholarships

TopX Scholarships

The purpose of the Scholarship is to facilitate a student enrolled at UQ in the Bachelor of Agribusiness or Bachelor of Agribusiness/Applied Science (Animal Science/Animal Production) program to undertake one semester of full time study in the United States at Texas A&M University, Texas.

International Student Exchange Scholarship


The  TopX International Scholar will receive a scholarship to the value of AUD$7,500 to cover travel to and within the United States and assist with the additional costs associated with studying abroad.
Conditions associated with the Scholarship are that the TopX International Scholar will:

  • Undertake a research project associated with the US beef industry;
  • Provide a monthly report of their progress and their views of student life at Texas A&M;
  • On his/her return to Australia, make a presentation to the TopX Executive Management team; and
  • Be willing to undertake vocational work placement with TopX;

Eligibility
The International Scholar will:

  • be a full time student enrolled in either the 2nd year of the Bachelor of Agribusiness degree program or the 3rd year of the B Agribusiness/B Applied Science (Animal Science/Animal Production) program;
  • be able to take up the Scholarship at Texas A&M University in the Fall Semester (mid August - mid December );
  • be able to meet accommodation, books and medical insurance. As an Exchange Student there are no tuition fees charged by Texas A&M University but the student must pay the normal HEC fees associated with study at the University of Queensland.

Student Scholarship

The Scholar will receive:

  • a scholarship to the value of AUD$3,000.
  • an opportunity to undertake work experience with TopX

Eligibility
The TopX Scholar will:

  • be a full time student enrolled in either the 3rd year of the Bachelor of Agribusiness degree program or the 4th year of the B Agribusiness/B Applied Science (Animal Science/Animal Production) program,
  • be willing to accept work experience with TopX during their final year.

Simon Anders Axelsen Memorial Scholarship

The scholarship is open to students who are domestic students as defined in the Fee Rules; and completed year 12 at Boonah High School in the year prior to the year of the award; and will commence the first year of an undergraduate program administered at UQ Gatton in the year of the award; and will study full-time at Gatton campus. The scholarship is awarded to the applicant showing greatest merit as demonstrated by academic achievement during secondary school studies; and an interest in farming the land in the Fassisfern Valley area upon graduation; and personal qualities, including leadership potential, which may be evidenced by support from personal referees; and other evidence that may be considered relevant by the Executive Dean. The scholarship is awarded as tenure becomes vacant.

Value:

  • Variable each year and tenable for the normal minimum duration of the recipient's program subject to satisfactory academic progress each semester;
  • and continued full-time enrolment at Gatton campus in the program for which the scholarship was awarded.

Coca-Cola/Australian Council of Agricultural Societies Regional Scholarships

The Australian Council of Agricultural Societies with funding from Coca-Cola has on offer annually thirty three (33) scholarships for students in regional areas of Australia who are studying agriculturally related courses. For more information and application forms: www.acas.asn.au/coca-cola.

Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) Scholarships

The GRDC provides a range of scholarships including the:

  • Agricultural Training Award (for vocational students) $3,000
  • The Grains Industry Undergraduate Honours Scholarship $5,000 + $1,000 for project operating expenses
  • The Grains Industry Research Scholarship $25,000 pa + $5,000 for project operating expenses

2009 Science and Innovation Awards for Young People in Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry

The 2009 Science and Innovation Awards for Young People in Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry are now open. If you are aged between 18 and 35 years and employed or studying in an agricultural, fisheries, forestry, food or natural resource management related industry and you want to use science, technology and innovation to advance the future of that industry, then you may be eligible to apply.

Value: Up to $10,000 is available for each award winner to carry out an innovative project that will benefit rural industries.

MINTRAC (National Meat Industry Training Advisory Council Limited) Undergraduate Scholarship

MINTRAC is offering scholarships to people of all ages interested in a career in meat processing, to attend a university or other tertiary institution (for example a TAFE or college) for full-time study to gain a qualification relevant to the meat processing industry. The purpose of the scholarship is to encourage people to join the meat industry and undertake qualifications which will benefit the meat processing industry in the future.

In order to be eligible for this scholarship, students must:

  • be undertaking full-time tertiary studies for the first time
  • be studying for a qualification which is relevant to the meat processing industry
  • agree to work in a meat processing plant for six weeks per annum for the duration of the qualification with the intent to continue employment with the plant on completion of the qualification
  • have written support from a meat processing plant which is a member of AMPC indicating:
  • how the student will be employed throughout their study
  • a proposed career plan for the student
  • where the student will likely be employed in the company on completion of their studies
  • how the qualification will benefit the plant and the industry.

Postgraduate/Honours Scholarships/Bursaries

Elliott Newspaper Group Honours Scholarship 2009

The Elliott newspaper group, in conjunction with the Murray Darling Association Environment Foundation and The Murray-Darling Freshwater Research Centre will be providing an honours student scholarship in 2009.

The scholarship supports current Honours level students conducting research into issues important to the sustainability of river systems within the
Murray-Darling Basin.

The Scholarship is for $4700 to fund both the research ($2200) and the student ($2500).

The Peter Whiteman Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship provides financial support to assist the research and professional development of a postgraduate student studying in the area of tropical agronomy.

This bursary is awarded based on income from the original bequest which changes from year to year. The bursary amount for 2009 is $1937.24

 

The Edwin Munro Scholarship in Agricultural Science (Postgraduate)

The Edwin Munro Scholarship is awarded to a student who has completed a Bachelor of Agricultural Science with Honours and is enrolled for the first time as a postgraduate student. This scholarship is awarded based on general proficiency throughout undergraduate studies.

This bursary is awarded based on income from the original bequest which changes from year to year.  The bursary amount for 2009 is $1809.90.

The Daniel Walker McLeod Bursary

The bursary was established in 1963 and is available to postgraduate students pursuing a program leading to a degree with honours, a masters degree, or the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in veterinary science.

Nomination of the recommended applicant will take into account the academic proficiency and the financial needs of candidates for the award. The value of this bursary is variable.

  • Applications close in approximately March annually

 

Pork CRC Undergraduate Honours Awards

Ten (10) undergraduate honours awards are available annually for "open" research projects, designed to increase the exposure of pig science to students and to direct more students into pig science-related study. The awards can be used for preliminary investigations into new research ideas, which may lead to larger scale research programs in the future or they can be used to conduct smaller scale experiments within currently funded Pork CRC projects.

  • Value: $10,000 (with up to $5,000 provided as a supplement for the operating costs of the project and up to $5,000 being a scholarship for the student.)

RSPCA Australia Alan White Scholarship for Animal Welfare Research

For full-time or part-time students enrolled in Australian tertiary institutions for the funding of original research aimed at improving the welfare of animals in Australia. The 2009 award was $7,690.

RSPCA Australia Scholarship for Humane Animal Production Research

For full-time or part-time students enrolled in Australian tertiary institutions for the funding of original research related to the development of humane alternative animal production systems. The 2009 award was $7,690.

Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) Postgraduate Studentships

The awards aim to facilitate research and training in areas of practical value to the Australian beef, sheep meat and goat meat industries. Applicants must be Australian citizens or permanent residents.  A number of different awards are available:

  • MLA Studentships - postgraduate Diploma or Masters courses, maximum duration two years
  • MLA Junior Research Fellowships - postgraduate degree at PhD or equivalent level, maximum duration three years
  • MLA Study Awards - sabbatical type training for established professionals, maximum duration one year.

Australian Centre for Plant Functional Genomics (ACPFG) Scholarships

The ACPFG Scholarships are available in the fields of biotechnology, biological and plant sciences, chemistry, bioinformatics and mathematics. Scholars can be based in ACPFG nodes at the University of Adelaide, the University of Melbourne, The University of Queensland or the Department of Primary Industries at La Trobe University. Scholarship applications are accepted throughout the year and approximately ten (10) are awarded each year. Research and travel expenses are covered as well. The value of this scholarship is $A25,000 (per annum). This award is to be used for research, living expenses and travel. This scholarship is paid fortnightly for the period of three (3) years.

This scholarship is for study in Australia for those who have achieved Honours 2A or equivalent. Only citizens of Australia or permanent residents can apply.

 

CSIRO Livestock Industries PhD Scholarships

CSIRO Livestock Industries regularly offer a number of PhD scholarships at up to $30,000 p.a. (taxable). Eligible applicants should be completing, or have completed, an honours science degree (or equivalent in agricultural or veterinary sciences or related disciplines). The successful candidates will be chosen on academic merit and will be able to choose a project from a number of specific research areas (for comprehensive list, see http://www.csiro.au/listudent). The scope of research ranges from livestock systems research through to molecular biological approaches to livestock problems designed to enhance the research capacity to support the Australian livestock industries.

Scholarships will be available in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and Western Australia. Successful candidates will be required to enrol for a PhD at an appropriate tertiary institution in the host State. This scholarship is offered once only to an unspecified number of people. Submission dates for scholarship application are not specified.

The value of this scholarship is $A30, 000 (maximum per annum). This award is to be used for living expenses. This scholarship is paid fortnightly for the period of three (3) years.

Cotton Research and Development Corporation (CRDC) Postgraduate Scholarships in Cotton

These scholarships are to encourage deserving young Australians to pursue exciting research opportunities within Australia’s leading agricultural industry. In making a selection the Corporation will consider: the personal qualities and academic excellence of the applicant; and the benefits to the Australian cotton industry, and the nation, from the proposed research. The Scholarships may be up to three (3) years duration and can be undertaken in any field of cotton research. Applicants are strongly advised to seek industry input before compiling submissions. Applications for Postgraduate Scholarships can be submitted either at the end of September each year (main round of funding for Scholarships) or at the end of January each year.

These scholarships are offered annually to an unspecified number of people.

  • The value of a scholarship is $A32, 000 (maximum per annum). This award is to be used for living expenses and fees. This scholarship is paid fortnightly.

Apple University Consortium Offers Honours Scholarship

The AUC Honours Scholarships program was a new initiative in 2007, and is available to domestic full- and part-time students of AUC member universities who are in their honours year. Applications are accepted from students enrolled in a broad range of disciplines, including the Sciences, Humanities, Engineering, Arts, Health and Business.

Applicants must be undertaking a full-year research project that in some way depends on or uses, uniquely Apple technologies. The Scholarships are valued at $4,000 with extra funding for conference attendance and publication. 

 

MINTRAC (National Meat Industry Training Advisory Council Limited) Postgraduate Scholarship

MINTRAC is offering scholarships to students undertaking Honours, Master or Doctorate programs with research in the meat industry. Scholarships may be granted to undertake undergraduate (in the case of Honours students) or postgraduate research degrees (for Masters and Doctorate students) in disciplines relevant to the meat industry.

These scholarships include research in the meat industry conducted at Australian universities towards the following qualifications:

  • full-time study towards a Doctorate for a maximum of three (3) years
  • part-time study towards a Doctorate for a maximum of five (5) years
  • full-time study towards a Masters qualification for a maximum of two (2) years
  • part-time study towards a Masters qualification for a maximum of four (4) years
  • full-time study towards an Honours qualification for a maximum of one (1) year
  • part-time study towards an Honours qualification for a maximum of two (2) years
