Research conducted by Dr Perach Nuriel has featured on the cover of the October issue of Geology magazine, published by The Geological Society of America.

Dr Perach Nuriel completed a PhD at UQ in 2011, under the supervision of Associate Professor Gideon Rosenbaum in the School of Earth Sciences.

The cover image shows intricate microstructures in a thin section that was cut from a fault-related rock.

Dr Nuriel focused her studies in the Dead Sea Fault Zone in Israel and Turkey, and was able to pinpoint the nature, geochemistry and timing of microstructures developed during faulting.

“The major advantage of this study is that once we understand the formation mechanisms of fault-related microstructures, we can potentially date the exact timing of faulting,” Dr Nuriel said.

Using the analytical facilities at UQ, in collaboration with Professor Sue Golding and Professor Jian-xin Zhao, Dr Nuriel was able to provide time constraints for individual seismic events.

Dr Nuriel is now based at the Department of Geological and Environmental Sciences at Stanford University.

Her research was also featured in the July issue of Geology.
