UNESCO’s 2010 World Press Freedom Day global conference host, The University of Queensland, has launched the official event website at www.wpfd2010.org

“Our new World Press Freedom Day (WPF Day) conference website is multi-purpose – it’s designed to keep our global audience up to date with planning for this important media event, and it’s full of information for our guests and delegates,” conference convenor Associate Professor Martin Hadlow said.

“For instance, on this web-site you will find information on how to register for the conference, details of the conference agenda, how to contact us with your queries, where to stay when you come to Brisbane and tourist information for those who might wish to combine a holiday in Australia with their visit to Brisbane for the conference.

“But as well as that, we’ve designed a content-rich and interactive website that we hope will encourage our audiences to share their media freedom and freedom of information stories, and kick off a lively pre-conference debate about the latest press freedom and freedom of information issues all around the world”, he said.

The slogan featured on the website’s home page is: Great is Truth, And Mighty Above All Things.

“This is the wording above the main entrance to the Forgan Smith Building at The University of Queensland," Associate Professor Hadlow said.

"These words fit well with the theme of this year's conference, which is Freedom of Information: the Right to Know.

“Access to a free press, the rights of journalists to go about their work unhindered and the enjoyment of freedom of expression by the citizenry are all key elements of a democracy.

“As the proud host of the first global UNESCO World Press Freedom Day event to be held in the Pacific, we look forward to welcoming hundreds of journalists and media professionals from around the world to Brisbane this 2-3 May to discuss threats to the independence of the media and to celebrate the importance of free and fearless journalism."
