The University of Queensland has honoured its outstanding teachers and education programs at its 9th UQ Excellence in Teaching & Learning Awards at Customs House tonight.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor Debbie Terry, said the awards recognised a dedicated and inspirational group of academics who were dedicated to their students.

“Tonight we are honouring a group of professional educators who not only see their role as imparting knowledge, but to develop their students into valued members of society,” Professor Terry said.

“We are fortunate at UQ to have such people and these awards are just one small way to show our thanks for all their hard work day in and day out.”

The UQ awards are split into three categories to recognise and acknowledge the depth and breadth of the University’s commitment to teaching and learning: Awards for Teaching Excellence worth $10,000 for each individual; Awards for Programs that Enhance Learning worth $10,000 for each team; and Citations for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning worth $4000 each for individuals or teams.

Professor Terry said the awards also provided crucial recognition for teachers, many of whom went on to compete for and win national teaching awards.

UQ had three Australian Learning & Teaching Council (ALTC) winners for 2009, all of whom had won University-based teaching awards in previous years, including Dr Victor Galea, who was honoured for teaching excellence, a team from the School of Political Science and International Studies was honoured for programs that enhance learning and Professor Paul Memmott received the prestigious Neville Bonner Award for Indigenous Education.

The result for the 2009 ALTC awards continued UQ's record of winning more national awards for teaching than any other Australian university.

Guest speaker for the evening was Professor Randall Bass, Executive Director of the Center for New Designs in Learning & Scholarship at Georgetown University.

Professor Bass specialises in the integration of new technologies, pedagogy and educational change and is nationally recognised in the USA as a leader in this field. He will also present a keynote address at UQ on his work on November 5.
