Beef Australia 2009 in Rockhampton is the launching pad for a fundraising effort that will help train future generations of veterinary scientists.

The University of Queensland's School of Veterinary Science this week launches its ‘Donate A Beast For Sale' program, which invites the livestock industry to donate the proceeds of the sale of a beast at meatworks or saleyards.

All sale proceeds will go towards funding urgently needed equipment for the new School of Veterinary Science. Veterinary students will begin the 2010 academic year in the school's new purpose-built, state-of-the-art facilities at UQ Gatton.

School of Veterinary Science Capital Campaign Vice President Don Mackay said sales agents were already supporting the fundraising effort.

“The support shown by the ‘Donate A Beast For Sale' program's primary participating agents Elders, Landmark and Ruralco is greatly appreciated and I encourage other members of the livestock industry to offer their support,” Mr Mackay said.

“The School of Veterinary Science has a proud record of significant contributions to the livestock industry in the areas of research and biosecurity and the University is making a huge investment in support of the industry with the planned new and refurbished facilities at UQ Gatton.

“The school's new, world-class facilities, combined with the Centre for Advanced Animal Science will present many benefits and opportunities for the livestock industry and will play an integral role in developing our skill base and undertaking research that will secure future biosecurity and market access.”

He said the relocation of the school into new facilities would provide staff, students and scientists with the best possible facilities necessary to promote science and education that will directly support the health and welfare of the livestock industry.

UQ's School of Veterinary Science has produced more 3000 graduates who practise in 53 countries around the world, and 70% of all practising veterinarians in Queensland are UQ graduates.

The school's key contributions to the livestock industry include:

- Research projects worth $7 million conducted by School of Veterinary Science researchers on behalf the of beef industry
- A leading producer of veterinary pathologists in Australia, who are at the forefront of the diagnosis of endemic, emerging and exotic diseases
- Operation of the Animal Genetics Laboratory which provides the livestock industries with a world class parentage analysis and gene marker service
- Houses Australia's only Centre for Animal Welfare and Ethics

The School of Veterinary Science will have an Information Booth at Beef Australia at Site 57 in the Sidney Kidman Pavilion from May 5-8.
