Staff, alumni and students associated with The University of Queensland have been honoured in the Australia Day awards.

Those receiving honours, as currently known include:

Officer(AO) in the General Division

• UQ alumnus Professor Brian Crommelin (Laws 1971), for service to the law and to legal education, particularly as a tertiary educator and through the development of mining and petroleum law in Australia.

Member (AM) in the General Division

• Associate Professor Robert Beeton, of the School of Integrative Systems, for service to the environmental sciences as a researcher and educator and through a range of professional and natural resource management organisations.

• Alumnus Dr Ian Cameron (Engineering 1952), for service to civil engineering, particularly in the area of bridge construction, to dispute resolution, and to professional and community associations.

• Alumnus The Hon Justice Keiran Cullinane (Laws 1966), for service to the judiciary and to the law, to the James Cook University, and to the community of north Queensland.

• Alumna Lesley McFarlane (Bachelor of Education Studies 1975, Master Educational Studies 1981), for service to education, particularly as an advocate for improved learning opportunities for women and girls, through curriculum development and professional organisations.

• Alumnus Llewellyn Russell (Economics 1969), for service to the shipping and transport logistics industries, to the development and promotion of trade opportunities, and to professional associations.

• Alumna Professor Julianne Schultz (Arts 1977), for service to the community as a journalist, writer, editor and academic, to fostering debate on issues affecting society, and to professional ethics and accountability.

• Alumnus Peter Short (Laws 1984, Adjunct Professor of Law), for service to the law as a practitioner, to legal education and the promotion of ethical standards, through contributions to a range of professional organisations, and to the community, particularly people with an intellectual disability.

• Alumnus Professor James Taylor (PhD Education 1986), for service to tertiary education, particularly in the areas of open learning, on-line and distance education, as an academic, researcher and administrator.

• Alumnus and staff member Professor Harvey Whiteford (Medicine & Surgery 1977), Kratzmann Professor of Psychiatry of the Schools of Medicine (Psychiatry) and Population Health, for service to medicine as a leader in mental health reform, the development of national standards of clinical care, professional comptence and economic policy.

Medal (OAM) in the General Division

• Alumna Ann Bennison (Arts 1987), for service to local government, particularly through the Queensland and Australian Local Government Associations, and to the community.

• Alumnus Dr Ian Bunce RFD ED (Medicine & Surgery 1967), for service to medicine in the field of haematology through clinical and administrative roles, and to the Leukaemia Foundation of Queensland.

• Alumna Deidre Brown (Science 1948) , for service to the community particularly through the Alumni Association of UQ (now the Alumni Friends of The University of Queensland Inc.)

• Alumnus George Curphey (Science 1956), for service to the community through the administration of the Sylvia and Charles Viertel Charitable Foundation.

• Alumnus Victor Doig (Engineering 1957), for service to surf lifesaving through the promotion of new resuscitation methods, and to engineering.

• Alumnus Joseph Donnelly (Arts 1965, Dip Physical Education 1958), for service to education as a teacher and contributor to school sports.

• Alumnus Commodore James Longden (Economics 1983), for service to the community of Eden-Monaro and to the Australian Capital Territory through the Anglican Church and a range of service organistions.

• Alumnus and staff member Associate Professor Ian McPhee, of the School of Medicine's division of orthopedic surgery (Medicine & Surgery 1967), for service to medicine in the field of orthopedic surgery, as a clinician, academic educator, researcher and contrbutor to professional organisations.

• Science student Melanie Schlanger, for service to sport as a gold medallist at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

• Alumna Dr Gail Waterhouse (Medicine & Surgery 1977), for service to the community through the provision of humanitarian aid to the people of Vietnam.

• Alumnus Dr Robert Weiland (PhD Education 1982), for service to education in Western Australia, particularly for children with special learning needs.

• Alumnus and staff member Dr Chester Wilson (Medicine & Surgery 1972), of the School of Medicine, for service to rural and remote medicine and as a general practitioner, and to the community of Charleville.

• Alumnus Dr Leonard Young (Science 1955, Medicine & Surgery 1957), for service to medicine in rural and remote areas as a physician and through professional organisations.

Public Service Medal (PSM)

• Alumna Louise Hand (Arts 1976), for outstanding public service as Deputy Head of Mission at the Australian Embassy in Jakarta in leading a whole-of-government approach to inter-agency work which has delivered significant outcomes for Australia and Indonesia.

• Alumnus David Kopelke (Arts 1981), for outstanding public service to education in Queensland, particularly in the field of environmental education.

• Alumnus Dennis Wogan (Engineering 1966, Economics 1974), for outstanding public service to the road design and construction industry.

Australian Police Medal (APM)

• Alumnus Detective Chief Superintendent Jeffrey Loy (MBA 2008).

Conspicuous Service Cross (CSC)

• Alumnus Colonel Anthony Wallace (Economics 1991), for outstanding achievement as the Director Workforce Modelling, Forecasting and Analysis within the People Strategies and Policy Group.

Australia Day Ambassadors included Dr Steve Johnston (School of Animal Studies) and two prominent weekly media broadcasters — Professor of Applied Language Studies at UQ Roly Sussex of the Arts Faculty and UQ graduate and veterinarian Dr Hugh Wirth.
