In this presentation, Dr Tom Stevenson will aim to outline the legal power(patria potestas) potentially available to the Roman citizen father (late Republic-early Empire) and to support those who have questioned the traditional image of a severe and emotionally distant Roman father.

He will argue, however, that the new consensus about a loving, emotionally close ideal tends to underestimate the evidence for friction between fathers and sons at Rome.

Dr Stevenson is Convenor of the Discipline of Classics & Ancient History in the School of History, Philosophy, Religion & Classics. His particular research interests lie in the world of late Republican and early Imperial Rome.
