The University of Queensland has placed fifth in the Asia Pacific and second in Australia in today’s 2018 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU).

The University retained its 55th position globally in the prestigious rankings.

Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Peter Høj said UQ’s consistent standing in the influential ranking was a strong endorsement of the quality and impact of the University’s research and teaching

“The ARWU ranking considers the number of highly cited researchers and articles published in high-ranking journals, as well as alumni and staff awards,” Professor Høj said.

“This is objective third-party data, so it is particularly gratifying that UQ continues to rank among the world’s best.

“From more than 10,000 universities in the world, only the top 500 are published in ARWU, so to come in at number 55 for the third successive year is a fantastic achievement.”

Professor Høj said the result highlighted the University’s disciplinary research strength and thus its ability to deliver globally significant solutions through collaboration and innovation.

“At UQ we are focused on achieving even greater impact by building research partnerships with a broad range of local and global networks,” he said.

“We are equipping our students and graduates to be the next generation of research leaders who will continue to create and translate knowledge to make a real difference to health, the environment and industries around the world.”

Launched in 2003, ARWU has been published by the independent higher education consultancy ShanghaiRanking since 2009.

In global subject rankings announced by ShanghaiRanking in July, UQ was the only Australian university to achieve a number-one spot – for Mining and Mineral Engineering – one of three UQ subjects in the top 10.

UQ ranked 43rd overall globally in the Performance Ranking of Scientific Papers for World Universities by National Taiwan University, also known as NTU Ranking, which was also released this week.
