The University of Queensland’s excellence in life sciences has been recognised, with a prestigious global rankings system naming UQ the top in Australia for the subject.

UQ sits at number one in Australia and at 32 globally for life sciences in the Times Higher Education (THE) subject rankings.

This follows a top-20 international placing in the Academic Ranking of World Universities by Broad Subject Fields earlier this month.

UQ Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Joanne Wright said the university had performed very well across many subject areas.

“UQ has six of a possible eight subjects ranked within the top 100 institutes globally – an impressive outcome and a testament to the quality of staff, students and facilities at UQ,” she said.

“These rankings consider the teaching and learning environment as well as research and citations.

“The university is working to build on these impressive strengths even further with our five-year student strategy.”

The THE subject rankings recognise UQ’s strength in clinical, pre-clinical and health subjects at 43rd globally and fourth in Australia.

The university also performed well in social sciences (67th globally and fifth in Australia), engineering and technology (68th globally and fourth in Australia), business and economics (73rd globally and sixth in Australia) and physical sciences (98th globally and fifth in Australia).

“The category of business and economics is a new rankings area for the Times Higher Education, and I’m delighted to see UQ perform so well in this area,” Professor Macdonald said.

“With six new UQ degree programs announced for 2017 and our new MicroMasters program, UQ strives to provide a meaningful and recognised higher education experience for our students.”

UQ recently placed 60th internationally and third in Australia in the THE World University Rankings, 55th globally and second in Australia in the Academic Ranking of World Universities and 51st globally in the QS World Rankings.
