Research into social identity and group dynamics, particularly the response to stigma and oppression, has led Professor Jolanda Jetten to be awarded a prestigious fellowship.
The University of Queensland School of Psychology expert will be formally inducted into the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia (ASSA) in November.
“Only a handful of ASSA fellowships are granted each year, so this is a wonderful honour,” Professor Jetten said.
“To be recognised alongside other distinguished social scientists firms my resolve to continue to explore the processes of social groups and accompanying pressures.”
Professor Jetten is an Australian Research Council Future Fellow and won the Kurt Lewin Medal for social psychology research in 2014.
University of Queensland Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Peter Høj commended Professor Jetten on her latest achievement, which was a further testament to the superb career she had built as a social psychologist.
“This impressive distinction is not only evidence of tremendous scholarly achievement, but an indication of the broader societal influence of Jolanda’s work,” Professor Høj said.
“The presence of one of our researchers in this induction reinforces the fact that UQ researchers make exceptional contributions to society.
“Our researchers, teachers and students are determined to find solutions to some of the world’s toughest problems.”
ASSA fellowships recognise Australia’s key minds in social sciences and their contribution to public policy.
ASSA is one of the four learned academies in Australia, responsible for providing interdisciplinary advice important matters to Australian governments.
Professor Jetten and 29 other elected fellows will be formally inducted into the Academy in November.
More than 130 UQ staff (including honorary and adjunct appointments) and professors emeriti are fellows of Australia’s learned academies.
