The University of Queensland’s School of Nursing and Midwifery, and the School of Social Work and Human Services, have joined to become the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Social Work.

The new School’s Acting Head, Associate Professor Christine Neville, said the merge would help reshape the training of future professionals in clinical, healthcare and social welfare services.

“This concentrates our focus on interdisciplinary healthcare and social welfare services to ensure graduates are ready for the multi-faceted workplace,” Dr Neville said.

“Students will gain a greater understanding of the prevention, remedy and management of human illness with the consideration of the social factors that influence quality of life and the success of healthcare strategies.”

The Associate Dean (Academic) of the Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences, Professor Sarah Roberts-Thomson, said the partnership would enhance student experience and learning.

“Australia’s health and welfare services will benefit from a more innovative, cohesive and compassionate workforce,” Professor Roberts-Thomson said.

“The new school will draw from more than 50 years of social work and human services professional practice development and 11 years of educating highly skilled nurses and midwives.

“We look forward to the School setting new standards in holistic health care and social welfare education.”

The School of Nursing, Midwifery and Social Work is based in the Chamberlain Building on the UQ St Lucia Campus. Its teaching is undertaken at clinical schools in hospitals around southeast Queensland.
