The University of Queensland Symphony Orchestra, The University of Queensland Chorale and special guests The St Peter’s Chorale will perform a trio of masterpieces at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre this Sunday.
During the two-hour concert more than 250 musicians will perform Mahler's Titan Symphony No.1 in D Major, Dvořák's Carnival Overture and the Polovtsian Dances from Prince Igor by Alexander Borodin.
The orchestra will be conducted by Warwick Potter.
Graeme Morton will lead the UQ chorale while his daughter, Kathryn, will conduct The St Peter’s Chorale.
UQ School of Music head Professor Margaret Barrett said the orchestra and the chorale were the school’s largest ensembles.
“They not only play a vital role the students’ program of study but they also contribute significantly to UQ’s outreach and engagement activities, which gives the broader community the opportunity to participate in university life.
“This concert is a signal event in its collaboration with community partner St Peter’s Chorale from St Peter’s Lutheran College who will perform with the UQSO and UQ Chorale.
“The concert features one of the major works of the orchestral repertoire Mahler's Symphony no 1, the Titan.
“The name alone suggests the enormous demands of the work and it is testimony to the quality of the ensembles that they are tackling such repertoire.”
