The University of Queensland’s Diversity Week Photo Competition has showcased the landscapes, animals, plants, friendships, sunsets and historic buildings of UQ’s Gatton campus.

Students and staff were asked to submit an an iconic UQ Gatton image and accompanying statement to the competition, titled Unleash your arty side.

The three winners, who each received a $150 camera, were UQ staff member Sandra Blyth and students Mark Owens and Justin Matthews.

The People’s Choice Award for the most popular image on the UQ Gatton Facebook page went to Andrew Fletcher for his image that conveyed the importance of friendship.

Sandra Blyth presented an image based on UQ Gatton’s diverse surroundings- building, architecture, plant life and animals.

Veterinary student Mark Owens won with a collage of the Central Walkway, also known as the Avenue of Palms.

UQ Applied Science student Justin Matthews, who assembled an image of different aspects of the campus, entered the competition as it allowed him to creatively express what the campus means to him.

“I really enjoyed taking part in the competition, I thought it was really clever and creative,” he said.

“I had a hard time deciding on what part of the UQ Gatton landscape I would focus on as it is really photographic.

“I decided on the Central Walkway as to me it is the heart of the campus.

“It was interesting to see the difference in what is iconic about UQ Gatton to each person.

“The entries were diverse, ranging from pictures of animals to sunsets,” he said.

All of the finalists presented their entry and spoke about the story behind the design at UQ Gatton’s International Food Festival last week.

The entries can be viewed online at the UQ Gatton Facebook page.
