A University of Queensland (UQ) journalism and arts graduate has been named first runner-up in the Ekka Showgirl competition this year.

Caitlin Holding, a journalist for WIN News at Hervey Bay, said she was excited at being chosen as runner-up in the Queensland Miss Show Girl Award.

“I did not expect to be placed so highly with all these beautiful and talented women,” she said.

Caitlin said she enjoyed her experience at the UQ School of Journalism and Communication (SJC).

She said the opportunities and resources available to the current cohort of journalism students were abundant.

“I used handy cams to capture all my footage but the SJC building is now fully equipped and I'm definitely envious of the current students who get hands on broadcast experience,” she said.

Caitlin was interviewed by a number of third year UQ journalism students who were selected for a 10- day program of scripting, recording, and editing stories for Channel Nine at the Ekka.

The students worked under the supervision of television industry professional Dr Bruce Redman who taught Caitlin in Visual Journalism in 2009.

“It’s wonderful to see graduates, like Caitlin, go onto careers in broadcast,” said Dr Redman.

“Programs like the Ekka experience help to fine tune students’ skills in television production and assist them to develop their passion for journalism,” he said.

Caitlin said the Ekka program was wonderful hands-on experience for students.

“It's been great to see Dr Redman teaching the students at a broadcast level using equipment and techniques that we use at WIN every day – they are very lucky,” she said.
