There will be no excuse for people to not keep fit this summer with the opening of the UQ Fitness and Aquatic Centre – The War Memorial Swimming Pool at The University of Queensland Gatton.

The $5 million facility was opened by Mr Shayne Neumann MP, Federal Member for Blair.

“I am passionate about a healthy lifestyle and keeping fit and having more resources to ensure that people can maintain healthy lifestyles is definitely a positive,” Mr Neumann said.

“With the opening of the new pool and cardio and weights gym on the UQ Gatton campus combined with the new health program in Ipswich, Healthy Active People in Ipswich (HAPI) project, this should boost the wellness of people living in the Lockyer Valley and Ipswich areas.”

“From my history working in the area I have heard a lot about this pool as it is famous for being hand dug by the students. It bonds the community as most people can claim either taking part or knowing someone who did, it is the pool that everyone built!” he said.

Mr Neumann has been an ambassador for the Gatton Campus pushing the funding application for the new complex and also for the $47 million of Federal funding the School of Veterinary Science received to open their $100 million facility on the campus in 2010.

The project was supported by the Australian Government which provided $3 million from Voluntary Student Unionism (VSU) funding.

The UQ Fitness and Aquatic Centre – The War Memorial Swimming Pool was designed by Architectus and built by McNab and the facility is managed by UQ Sport.
