UQ student Laura Clemesha will fly the maroon flag as the sole Queensland netballer selected to attend the World Youth Cup Training Camp in Canberra next month.

The young defender will join 24 other athletes from across the country to form the initial squad for the 2013 World Youth Cup. The camp will take place from November 29–December 16 at the Australian Institute of Sport.

Ms Clemesha said she felt privileged to have been selected and to be given the opportunity to train under and learn from the Australian 21/U coach and assistant coach.

“I am very excited and am looking forward to the awesome opportunity to attend the World Youth Cup Training Camp,” she said.

2011 has already been a huge year for the Bachelor of Arts student, who was named as captain of the 19/U Queensland team, played at the 2011 national championships as part of the 21/U Queensland team, and was also named in the 19/U Australian team.

Laura said she felt lucky to be able to represent Queensland within the squad.

“Hopefully more Queenslanders will also be added to the squad in the lead-up period to World Youth Cup selections,” she said.

Throughout the 18-day camp Ms Clemesha said she hoped to focus on her skill development as well as building playing relationships with the other girls in the team. She said selection would be extremely competitive.

“I think I speak for every other netballer in the squad when I say to be selected in the 2013 World Youth Cup team and given an opportunity to represent my country would be an incredible honour,” she said.

“Selection in the team will be very competitive and to come away with a spot is the goal of every girl in the squad.”

The 2013 World Youth Cup will be played in Glasgow, Scotland.
