Medical students got the chance to learn from the 2010 Australian of the Year and world-renowned researcher in the field of early psychosis and youth mental health, Professor Patrick McGorry, at training sessions held at The University of Queensland (UQ) this week.

UQ’s School of Medicine hosted the in-house training delivered by Professor McGorry over two days at the UQ Ipswich Campus.

Professor McGorry also visited the Ipswich Hospital and Queensland Health facilities during his time in Queensland this week.

Professor McGorry is the Professor of Youth Mental Health at the University of Melbourne and Director of Orygen Youth Health and Orygen Youth Health Research Centre in Victoria, Australia.

His ground-breaking research has been integral in the development of safe and effective treatments for emerging mental health disorders in young people, particularly psychosis and severe mood disorders. He is widely published including over 300 papers and book chapters, and is the editor of five books.

Professor Geoff Mitchell, Head of the MBBS program at UQ Ipswich, said he was proud to have Professor McGorry provide teaching to the medical students and deliver a public lecture entitled ‘Early Intervention and Youth Mental Health Models of Care: 21st Century Solutions to Strengthen Mental Health Care and Modern Society’.

“The Ipswich School of Medicine is extremely honored to have secured him as the 2011 Visiting Academic,” Professor Mitchell said.

“His public lecture was of great interest and relevance to many people in the Ipswich community dealing with youth mental health issues either professionally or personally.”
