UQ will celebrate its sporting successes of 2010 at the Annual Blues & Sports Awards Dinner on Friday, March 25.

The dinner, which will be held at Hillstone, St Lucia Golf Links, will recognise outstanding sporting achievements of UQ students and teams from last year while also introducing the University’s new sporting scholarship holders.

Guests will include last year’s Sheffield Shield Player of the Season Chris Hartley, QLD Reds player James Hanson, Commonwealth Games gold medal-winning gymnast Danielle Prince and Federal Member for Ryan Jane Prentice.

The event falls within days of an important anniversary for UQ Sport and as such will also commemorate 100 years of sport at the University.

UQ Sport Executive Director Kim Guerin said this year’s event would be bigger and better than ever.

“UQ has such a proud sporting heritage and it’s always great to see such a healthy attendance not only by current students and club members but also past awardees from as early as the 1940s,” Ms Guerin said.

“With the 100th birthday of sport at the University this year we’re hoping to put on an extra special event and we encourage anyone involved in sport at UQ to come along.”

The Blues & Sports Awards Dinner is named after its distinguishing award, the University Blue – a tradition honoured at many universities throughout Australia and the UK.

These awards recognise outstanding achievement in university sport and have been awarded at UQ since 1913.

Past awardees of the prestigious UQ Blue include Kieren Perkins, James Horwill and Susie O’Neill.

As well as the Blue and Half Blue awards, the event will also include the presentation of the Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year awards, and several club awards such as Club of the Year, Coach of the Year, and Club Volunteer of the Year.
