A UQ statistician has won a prestigious international award for his influential contributions to the fields of classification, statistical learning and pattern recognition.
Professor Geoff McLachlan from UQ’s School of Mathematics and Physics will travel to Vancouver in December to accept the 2011 Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers International Conference on Data Mining (IEEE ICDM) Research Contributions Award.
As an ISI Highly Cited Author, Professor McLachlan is part of an elite club of less than half of one percent of all published researchers in the world. He has published six monographs, 25 book chapters, and more than 200 articles in peer-reviewed literature.
In 2010, Professor McLachlan was awarded the Pitman Medal of the Statistical Society of Australia in recognition of his outstanding achievements and contributions to the discipline of statistics.
"I am absolutely delighted and deeply honoured to have won this international award from the IEEE,” Professor McLachlan said.
“When I look at the list of previous winners, I cannot help feel very humble. I would also like to acknowledge my collaborators over the years."
Professor McLachlan is Director of the Centre for Statistics at the University of Queensland.
He was awarded an Australian Professorial Fellowship by the Australian Research Council (ARC) for 2007-2011 to undertake research on multivariate statistical methods with applications to cancer diagnostics, and has served on the editorial boards of several statistics and data mining journals.
UQ has a strong track record in statistical research with the Excellence in Research in Australia (ERA) survey earlier this year ranking UQ as the only university in the top band (well above world standard) in the statistics category.
