The current World President of Rotary International will join two predecessors at UQ tomorrow, August 19 to mark the work of University students pursuing global peace.
Ray Klinginsmith will attend a tree planting ceremony in honour of UQ’s Rotary Peace Fellows who study through the School of Political Science and International Studies (POLSIS).
He will be joined by two past presidents, both from Queensland: Sir Clem Renouf (1978–1979) and Glen Kinross (1997–1998).
UQ hosts one of only seven Rotary Centres for International Studies worldwide, which has seen dozens of students graduate as Peace Fellows since 2002.
Fellows are chosen from diverse backgrounds, based on their ability to have a significant and positive impact on world peace, understanding and conflict resolution during their careers.
Recent graduates include Kevin Melton, a USAid worker in Afghanistan, Arik Gutler-Ofir, who has founded a theatre company for Jewish and Palestinian youths, and Godfrey Mukalazi, who has set up a conflict resolution training centre in the African Great Lakes region.
The tree planting will take place at 2:30pm in the Peace Park (also known as President’s Park), adjacent to the UQ Boat Club, corner Keith and Macquarie streets.
