The Hawken laboratory is the scanning electron microscopy heart of the CMM. Within the laboratory located off Cooper road, underneath the Hawken building are a series of scanning electron microscopes that can examine a very broad range of sample types.  In addition to microscopy, many instruments are capable of microanalysis using a wide variety of techniques. The laboratory also houses two microprobe instruments that provide quantitative elemental analysis from polished specimens. 2009 saw the installation of a new Schottky Field Emission scanning electron microscope that provides researchers with the a high stability, high beam current field emission gun on an electron microscope that will be optimised for analytical applications at lower accelerating voltages.
