The award of a University Medal recognises the achievement of outstanding academic results throughout the student's program of study.
Medals are awarded in accordance with the University Medal Rules found in the Financial Awards, Prizes and Endowed Lectureships section of the Senate Rules and the Guidelines for the Award of University Medals in the Handbook of University Policies and Procedures.
To be considered for a University Medal, a student must have been awarded a bachelor degree with first class honours and have demonstrated academic excellence.
The Guidelines for the Award of University Medals are designed to ensure the objective assessment of medals nominations and they set out the University's method for determining "academic excellence" for the purposes of medals calculations. Each year the Committee for Academic Programs Policy (CAPP) is required to set the specific criteria for medals nominations including minimum grade point average (GPA) requirements and any limit on the number/percentage of medals that are to be awarded.
Currently, a minimum GPA of at least 6.55 including all courses contributing to the relevant program is required, and only the top 1% of bachelor degree graduates in the relevant faculty may be nominated.
Please note:
- additional criteria may also apply;
- the criteria are subject to annual review
Faculties review the academic record of each student who was awarded a bachelor degree with first class honours in a given year and submit nominations to CAPP in the following January for consideration.
After careful review and consideration by CAPP, nominations are forwarded to the Vice-Chancellor for approval. The Vice-Chancellor advises recipients of the Award.
If you have any questions about the award of University Medals, please consult the Director, Academic Administration.
