 Tax File Number (TFN)

If you wish to obtain a HECS-HELP, FEE-HELP, SA-HELP or OS-HELP loan, you must provide your Tax File Number (TFN).

If you apply for a HELP loan and do not have a TFN, or do not know it, you have until the semester, trimester or teaching period census date to either provide it via your HELP form or to pay up-front, otherwise your enrolment will be cancelled.

You should apply for a TFN as early as possible, as it may take some weeks for your application to be processed.

You can apply for a TFN at www.ato.gov.au (see ‘Get a Tax File Number’). If you apply for a TFN near the census date, ask the Tax Office to issue you with an interim ‘Certificate of application for a TFN’, which you should supply to your Student Centre before census to prevent the cancellation of your enrolment.

The University will only use your TFN to advise the Tax Office of your HELP debt.
