 Smartcards for continuing students

Issue of new smartcards
The University has commenced a project to replace existing student ID cards with smartcards by mid-2007. Students who commenced study from 2006 have already been issued with a smartcard.

Smartcards contain an embedded computer chip, which can be programmed to perform tasks and store information. Smartcards will be used from Semester 2, 2007 for photocopying and printing at the Library. New card readers will be installed in all UQ Libraries during the semester break.

If you are a continuing student without a smartcard, you will be contacted by email with instructions on how to exchange your current ID card for a new smartcard. If you have loaded credit on your student ID card, please use the remaining balance before exchanging your card.

Lost current ID card
If you have lost your current ID card, you will need to apply for a replacement card. A smartcard will be issued as your replacement card. Follow the instructions for replacement cards on the ID cards page on this site.

Library photocopiers and printers
You will need to exchange your ID card prior to the commencement of Semester 2, 2007 in order to use the new readers at Library photocopiers and printers. The Biological Sciences Library and the Social Sciences and Humanities Library will have a limited number of photocopiers which are able to read the current magnetic stripe cards (student ID and photocopy). These will run in parallel with the new smartcard readers for a short time during the transition period.

If you don’t exchange your ID card, you will need to purchase a new smartcard photocopy card from the Library.

Please contact the Student Centre on your campus if you have any further queries.
