  • Introduction
You are expected to be available to undertake your examinations at the times scheduled and at the campus where you normally attend classes.   If you cannot attend your examinations, you may be eligible to apply for a deferred examination. For details of eligibility, please see Section 5.7.9 of the UQ Policy and Procedures Library  (PPL) Assessment - Procedures.

Off campus examinations are only available in the following cases:

    • Semester 1 deferred and supplementary examination period for students in their final semester of study; and
    • Semester 2 deferred and supplementary examinations.
    • Summer Semester deferred and supplementary examination period for students not returning to study at UQ in semester 1

Please note that if you are returning to study in semester 2, you will NOT be permitted to sit semester 1 deferred and/or supplementary examination/s off-campus. You must consider the dates of the semester 1 deferred/supplementary examination period when making travel arrangements.

An application form to sit an examination off campus must be submitted at the same time as your application for deferred examination and/or request for supplementary assessment. Off campus arrangements will be subject to approval of the deferred or supplementary examination requests. It is expected that you will be available in the one location for the full duration of the examination period. Please note that off campus arrangements may not be possible for all forms of supplementary assessment, for example, practicals, examinations with video components.

Late applications will only be considered in the most exceptional of circumstances and provided the necessary arrangements can be made in the available time.

If you reside within 200 kilometres of a UQ campus, it is expected that you will sit your examinations on campus.

UQ has a network of examination centres available for this purpose throughout Australia and overseas, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region. Please note that you will be required to travel to the nearest approved venue in your area. Click on the relevant link  for a list of available domestic venues or a list of available overseas venues. Off campus arrangements may not be possible in some locations.

An email confirming your examination arrangements will be sent to your student email account after the finalisation of the examination timetable.

  • Costs
    • Within Australia - $180 for each examination
    • Outside Australia - $250 for each examination

Application forms must be submitted together with the application fee. The fee can be paid in person at a Student Centre or via credit card on the application form. Payments made via credit card will be processed on approval of the request for a deferred or supplementary examination.

  • Refunds
In all cases, requests for refunds of external examination fees should be submitted to the Manager, Examinations Section. Please note:
    • Non-attendance at the examination – No Refund
    • Notice of cancellation received by Examinations Section less than 3 days prior to the examination date – No Refund
    • Notice of cancellation received by Examinations Section 3 days or more prior to the examination date – 50% Refund

  • Exceptional Circumstances
Off campus examinations are generally not available for the end of semester examination period. In exceptional circumstances such as serious personal or emotional trauma, internally enrolled students may be allowed to undertake examinations off campus at the same time as other enrolled students, with the student paying for the administrative costs listed above. Each application is considered individually and supporting documentation should be submitted with the application.

    Due dates for applications:

    • Within Australia – 21 days prior to the commencement of the examination period
    • Outside Australia – 28 days prior to the commencement of the examination period

External students

Students whose enrolment is wholly external will be allocated to sit their end of semester examinations at an approved examination centre or a UQ Campus (Gatton, Ipswich or St Lucia). You will be contacted directly by the Examinations Section with details of your examination centre.

If you reside within approximately 200 kilometres of a UQ campus, it may be expected that you will sit your examinations on campus.

Students whose enrolment is multi-modal (i.e. partly external and partly internal) will be expected to sit their exams at the campus of their internal enrolment. You will be contacted directly by the Examinations Section with exam venue details for externally enrolled courses.

Please note however, externally enrolled students who submit an application for deferred examination and/or request for supplementary assessment must also submit a Request for off-campus form as notification to Examinations Section of the request for off-campus arrangements. The Request form must be submitted at the same time as the application for deferred examination and/or request for supplementary assessment, and by no later than the deadline for requests for supplementary assessment. The Request form may be faxed to (07) 3365 4415 from within Australia or to +61 7 3365 2214 for other countries, or emailed to examinations@uq.edu.au
