 Unable to sit an examination?

  • If you are unable to sit an end-of-semester examination scheduled during the standard examination period for medical reasons or because of other unavoidable circumstances, you may apply to sit the examination at a later date. You can do this by applying for a deferred examination.

  • If you become ill during an examination:
    • you must notify the examination supervisor of your intention to apply for a deferred examination before leaving the examination
    • you must attend a medical practitioner within one business day of the original examination and obtain a medical certificate
    • you may attend the University Health Service which is open daily during the examination period
    • you may apply for a deferred examination, which, if approved, you would sit in the designated deferred examination period.

  • If you are unable to sit for a mid-semester examination or practical test set by a school (ie. those conducted in class or during the semester), seek advice from that school on what you must do. Applications should be submitted to a Student Centre or to the relevant school.

You should familiarise yourself with Section 5.7.8 and 5.7.9 of the UQ Assessment policy and Part 1A of the General Award Rules regarding special examinations and be aware of the acceptable grounds for approval.  You will find a link to the General Award Rules on the University Rules page.

Please note:  Misreading the examinations timetable is NOT an approved reason for applying for a deferred examination.
