 Unable to sit an examination?

  • If you are unable to sit a central examination during the standard examination period for medical reasons or because of other unavoidable circumstances, you may apply to sit the examination at a later date. You can do this by applying for a special examination.

  • If you become ill during an examination:
    • you must notify the examination supervisor of your intention to apply for a special examination before leaving the examination
    • you must attend a medical practitioner within one business day of the original examination and obtain a medical certificate
    • you may attend the University Health Service which is open daily during the examination period
    • you may apply for a special examination, which, if approved, you would sit in the designated special examination period.

  • If you are unable to sit for an examination set by a school (for example, a mid-semester test or end-of-semester examination controlled entirely within the school), seek advice
from that school on what you must do. Do not apply for a special school examination through faculty offices, Examinations Section or the Student Centres.

You should familiarise yourself with Section 4.8.8 of the  Assessment policy and Part 1A of the General Award Rules regarding special examinations and be aware of the acceptable grounds for approval.  You will find a link to the General Award Rules on the University Rules page.

Please note:  Misreading the examinations timetable is NOT an approved reason for applying for a Special Examination.
