HECS-HELP is an Australian Government loan scheme that enables eligible students in a Commonwealth supported place to defer payment of their student contribution amounts until their income reaches the repayment threshold for compulsory repayment. This is indexed annually and is $47,196 for the 2011/12 financial year.
Australian citizens or holders of a permanent humanitarian visa are eligible for a HECS-HELP loan, and are entitled to a 10% discount if they choose to pay their student contribution amounts up-front.
New Zealand citizens or holders of a permanent non-humanitarian visa are considered domestic students and can apply for a Commonwealth supported place at UQ. However, they are not eligible for a HECS-HELP loan, and must pay their student contribution amounts up-front without the discount.
All Commonwealth supported students are required to submit a Request for Commonwealth support and HECS-HELP form. For University of Queensland students, the form is available online via your home page on mySI-net. You must supply your Tax File Number if you wish to obtain a HECS-HELP loan.
