The grounds on which the applications are based will be ruled acceptable or unacceptable in accordance with current policy as set down in the Policy and Procedures Library (PPL), No. 3.10.02b: Assessment-Procedures, section 5.7.9 which states as follows :
5.7.9 Granting of Deferred Examinations
For the purposes of the General Award Rules, students are given deferred examinations for medical or compassionate reasons. Deferred examinations are also generally granted –
- for a sporting or cultural commitment at state, national or international level (refer to PPL 3.50.07b – Programs and Assessment for Elite Athletes - Procedures)
- for serious personal or emotional trauma
- in very exceptional circumstances, for example, an important planned family or social commitment or unavoidable work commitment
Deferred examinations are not granted where the executive dean or head of school was not satisfied that the student took reasonable measures (steps) to avoid the circumstance that contributed to the student missing or failing to complete the examination. These include:
- holiday arrangements, including overseas travel
- misreading an examination timetable
- social and leisure events, including sporting and cultural commitments other than at state, national or international representative level
- not having a University approved calculator
