Examination help for students with a disability

You may be eligible for special arrangements for your examinations if you have a significant mobility, sensory, learning or other physical or mental health impairment, permanent or temporary, which may prevent you from performing to capacity in an examination conducted under standard conditions.

Arrangements may include:

  • additional examination working time
  • rest breaks
  • use of a computer or a writer
  • ergonomic furniture
  • personal equipment
  • food and drink
  • a separate room
  • specially prepared examination papers, etc.

How to make special arrangements
The following procedure applies to all examinations including central and school examinations, mid-semester, end-of-semester, and deferred and supplementary examinations.

  1. Ensure you have medical or specialist documentation that outlines the nature of your disability or condition and its impact on your studies. Please see information on medical documentation (PDF) for more details.

  2. Make an appointment to see a Disability Advisor. [See the Contacts on the Students with a disability page] Bring your documentation with you for the interview with the Disability Advisor. He or she will discuss your examination requirements with you and recommend special arrangements for approval by the Director of Student Services. The Disability Advisor will then communicate with the Examinations Section to make appropriate arrangements for your examinations.

  3. Although you only need to contact your Disability Adviser if you require change to the approved requirements you must advise Examinations Section in writing of your specific examination needs before each examination period. You should complete a Request for special/alternative arrangements for exams form (PDF) or (Word) and submit it to a Student Centre or email to:

  4. You will be sent an arrangement form advising the revised details of your examinations. This form acts as an official agreement between the student and the University.

  5. The University's General Award Rules (GAR 1A.18.2) require that students must apply at least 14 calendar days before the commencement of the relevant end-of-semester examination period and at least 14 calendar days prior to the exam date for mid-semester exams, for special arrangements to be made.  (You will find a link to the General Award Rule on the University Rules page. Once you have accessed the General Award Rules, scroll down to Part 1A - Assessment.)

  6. If you are unable to attend an examination, telephone the relevant Examinations Section not less than 2 hours prior to the arranged starting time of the examination:
