Cross-institutional study is available to current UQ students who wish to undertake a relevant unit of study at another institution because it is not offered at UQ.
Approval is not granted routinely and is usually restricted to substantial grounds such as justifiable academic reasons, relocation for work commitments or compassionate reasons preventing you from attending a class on-campus.
If you have approval from your faculty or school to undertake cross-institutional study at another institution, you can have this study credited to your UQ program.
Procedures
It is the student’s responsibility to organise cross-institutional enrolment.
Allow plenty of time to deal with the administration at both universities. You will have to comply with all the due dates, policies and procedures of the other institution for the courses you undertake there.
Contact the other university and obtain their cross-institutional application form (or equivalent). When completing this form, the other university will generally request that you provide faculty or school approval for the application along with official academic records.
In order to apply for permission to undertake cross-institutional study, you must complete the Application for Cross Institutional Enrollment at Another University form (pdf) and submit it with relevant course outlines to your faculty or school at UQ. Submit your application preferably at least 3 weeks prior to the other institution's due date for enrollment, to allow sufficient time for processing .
Check your faculty or school website for any specific requirements relating to cross-institutional enrolment.
Cross-institutional study incurs a HECS-HELP student contribution for Commonwealth Supported students or a fee for fee-paying students. Cross-institutional students are required to make their HECS-HELP or fees payment to the institution at which they are undertaking the course. The other institution will require UQ to verify your HECS-HELP status.
International Students
International students may be able to undertake cross-institutional study at another Australian institution. Check with the other institution that they accept international cross-institutional students and the fees involved in doing so and that your visa can accommodate the enrolment. Students in receipt of a scholarship may require the permission of their scholarship provider.
Please note that UQ is the principal education provider and if approved to study a course at another institution, international students must ensure that their program of study will be completed within visa duration.
Applying for credit
Once the approved unit/s of study has/have been completed and you have received your official results, you must provide your faculty or school with the original official academic transcript in order for the unit/s of study to be credited towards your UQ program.
If you undertake cross-institutional study in your final semester, check when the other institution releases its results, as this may not be in sufficient time for graduation ceremonies at UQ.
