Compulsory courses
The program list*, read in conjunction with the program rules, outlines the courses you must take to complete your chosen program. In certain programs, you do not have a choice of courses — they are compulsory (ie mandatory or required) and you must enrol in, and pass them to be awarded your degree.
You will find the official list of courses and the official rules under the Information for current students or Program requirements links for each program on the Programs and courses website.
Elective courses
In those programs which prescribe compulsory courses, you may need to take additional courses from a list of courses specified in the program list* to meet your degree requirements. These additional courses are called electives. Electives are courses that you can choose from, which, when added to the compulsory (required) courses, enable you to meet your degree requirements.
In some programs, electives are chosen from a list of courses included as part of the program list* (eg Bachelor of Engineering) while in others, you can choose from a wide range of courses offered across the University (eg. Bachelor of Arts).
When choosing your electives, you should keep your career objective and the program requirements in mind. If you need help with choosing your electives, contact the relevant faculty Academic Advisor or school Administrative Officer within the Health Sciences Faculty.
Commonwealth supported students wishing to enrol in courses for which they will not gain credit may have to pay tuition fees.
