School Facilities and Resources
A number of facilities are available to students in the School of Music to assist them in their studies. Allocation of these follows, to the extent possible, the guidelines set out by the Graduate School, but is adapted to the rather different types of activities many of our research postgraduates undertake, especially practical and creative work.
Office Space
Full-time PhD candidates who are completing research theses are allocated a shared, air-conditioned office. The School aims to provide all full-time PhD students writing a thesis with a sole-use desk in this space wherever possible, including shelving space and filing cabinet. Offices are equipped with a telephone, individual power points and Internet access, and, in most cases, a desktop computer. (Depending upon numbers, sharing of desk and computing facilities may be necessitated for some. In such cases, the School will always attempt to deal as fairly as possible with all concerned. Part-time candidates writing a thesis are entitled to shared desk/computing facilities.)
Email
All postgraduate students are provided with free email accounts (which they are obliged to check regularly) as part of their enrolment at UQ.
Computer Lab and Recording Studio
The School of Music has two computer labs, one for undergraduate students and one for postgraduates (room 420). Computers in the lab include score writing and sound production software. There is also a fully equipped recording studio (room 511) for those students whose creative projects require it.
Practice Rooms
The School has eight practice rooms available for BMus student use on a roster system: Two hours per day on weekdays between 8am and 8pm. MPhil Performance students are entitled to book (depending on availability) up to three hours practice time in these facilities room per day. Details of use of practice rooms are posted on the practice room doors, bookings are on a first-come-first-served basis. Students are also allowed to practice in seminar and lecture rooms (excepting the Nickson Room) when they are not otherwise in use. Use of these rooms must be booked through the music office. Rooms must be left in good order after use. Where equipment is removed from any room it should be returned to its original place after use.
The Nickson Room and the concert Steinway grand pianos housed in it are not to be used as general practice facilities. However, approval to reserve practice time may be given to students rehearsing for forthcoming concerts, competitions or practical examinations. Students wishing to reserve a booking for the Nickson Room should apply to the Music Office.
Access
7am to 10 pm access to the building (including computer labs and practice rooms) is made available by means of a swipe card. Please enquire about this at the School of Music Office. Access to student offices is by purchasing a key provided to candidates individually.
Library Priviledges
The Architecture-Music Library provides a document delivery service which research higher degree students are entitled to use. They are also entitled to borrow library material, such as journals, not generally available at undergraduate level. The Architecture-Music Library also has a postgraduate area, with bookable desks, with internet access, available for use by music and architecture postgraduates. The University's Fryer Library is also well appointed to assist research postgraduates.
Conference/Research Funding
The School's financial position only allows it minimal scope to provide funding for conference travel and other research-related activities. For research higher degree students, a small yearly allocation and is made available upon approval of application by the School Research Committee. The application round is usually in July/August, and all research students will be notified closer to the time and invited to apply. For further details about the amounts available and what type of expenditure may be approved, please contact the Chair of the School's Research Committee. The Graduate School also offers travel awards, on a competitive basis, to enable students to access research resources in Australia or overseas that are not readily available at UQ.
