PhD in Music Performance

This program is intended for candidates who have attained a very high level of proficiency in vocal or instrumental performance and demonstrate the capacity to undertake research in the discipline. Candidates undertake a research project related to performance in their instrument or voice, which will make an original contribution to the body of knowledge in the field of music performance research. The program of research will enable candidates to further enhance their interpretative and critical skills, as evidenced by a portfolio of recorded performances formally embedded in the sequence of milestones and final recital. The Critical Commentary will provide an exegesis of the repertoire, in whole or part, and will relate the research topic to the broader field of the scholarship of performance.

All prospective applicants for the PhD in Performance should first submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) form prior to applying for the degree or requesting an audition. The EOI should supply information on both performance/concert experience and relevant research experience. The School of Music will determine whether to invite prospective applicants to audition based on the EOI and any further information the School may seek in relation to the prospective applicant’s intended research (e.g. a more detailed research proposal).


Those invited to audition should prepare around 50 minutes of material sufficient to demonstrate a range of stylistic interpretation and technical achievement commensurate with a professional concert standard. The audition should demonstrate that applicants possess the necessary skills and ability to pursue the proposed course of study.

The panel may choose not to hear the entire program. All decisions made by the panel in relation to the eligibility of the prospective candidate based on the audition will be final.
