Cellist Gwyn Roberts, a Churchill Fellow has studied with Sela Trau and Jan Sedivka in Tasmania, and Christopher Bunting in the United Kingdom. He has performed as Principal Cellist with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, and as Guest Principal with the Australian Chamber Orchestra, the Canberra Symphony Orchestra, and the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra. Mr. Roberts has been a member of a number of respected chamber music groups including the Mayne String Trio, the Queensland Piano Trio, Ensemble I, and the contemporary ensemble Perihelion.
He has performed as a recording artist for the ABC in most states of Australia and also for companies in Singapore, Greece, Austria, Holland and Norway. Mr. Roberts appears on three CD recordings of Australian contemporary music as a member of Perihelion.
A conducting student of Hans Swarovsky, Vanco Cavdarski and Werner Andreas Albert, Mr. Roberts has worked as a conductor with four ABC Symphony Orchestras, and the Queensland Philharmonic Orchestra. He is also regularly invited, both as a cellist and conductor, to tutor or direct vacation workshops and seminars with youth orchestra and professional organisations throughout Australia and overseas, and his past students hold teaching and performing positions in Australia and internationally.
Currently he is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Music, University of Queensland, and is involved with teaching the cello, conducting and pedagogy, tutoring chamber music, and the Co-ordinator of Ensemble and Practical Studies. He is also the Musical Director of the eighty-member Queensland University Symphony Orchestra.
In 2003, his 20th year as Music Director of the orchestra, Mr Roberts directed a program of string music at the UQ Customs House, a concert at QPAC of the music of Schubert, and performed the Lalo Cello Concerto with the orchestra under the direction of his mentor, Maestro Werner-Andreas Albert. In 2004, Mr Roberts directed the 4MBS Festival Finale in the QPAC Concert Hall with QUSO, and also conducted "Cosi fan Tutte" and "Dido and Aeneas" for the UQ Opera Workshop. He is currently Immediate-Past National President of AUSTA, the Australian Strings Association.
Future plans include further recitals in partnership with his wife, pianist Jenni Flemming, spending time with his children, son Morgan and daughter Phoebe Eloise, continuing his activities with the Brisbane-based chamber group Ensemble I, and enjoying time in the new family home in Chapel Hill.
