About

The Scholarship was established by Mr John Gilmour in memory of his wife, a singer of international renown who was also a part-time singing examiner for The University of Queensland's Department of Music from 1952 to 1962.

The object of the Scholarship is to assist a third/fourth year singing student of The University of Queensland or of the Queensland Conservatorium of Music to undertake further singing studies either in Australia or overseas.

The Scholarship shall be tenable for a maximum of 2 years and only one scholar shall be appointed at a time.

Eligibility
Third or Fourth year students and graduates of an undergraduate degree at The University of Queensland, Queensland Conservatorium of Music or Griffith University.

Applicant should be no more than 28 years of age and meet all the other conditions set out in the rules relating to the Scholarship (see below)

The winner of the Scholarship will be chosen at a public recital, when each candidate will be required to sing items in three different languages.

The award is based on the candidate's vocal skills, academic record and proficiency in at least two European languages other than English.

ETHEL OSBORNE SCHOLARSHIP RULES
(Established in 1983 following a bequest of $15,000 from John Gilmour in memory of his wife, Ethel Osborn Gilmour, an Australian and international singer and part-time Examiner in Singing with the Department of Music at The University of Queensland, 1952-1962.)

1. The object of the Scholarship is to assist a singing student of The University of Queensland or of the Queensland Conservatorium of Music to undertake further singing studies either in Australia or overseas.

2. The Scholarship shall be tenable for a maximum of 2 years and only one scholar shall be appointed at a time.

3. The value* of the Scholarship shall, unless otherwise determined by Senate, be approximately the amount of the income earned and anticipated to be earned by the capital fund between the termination of the preceding scholar’s term and the termination of the current scholar’s term.

The value of the scholarship over two years (2010 – 2011) is approximately $4,800.

4. If for any reason the whole of the accrued income at that time is not applied in the payment of the current Scholarship then the amount of income not so applied shall be accumulated and shall not become part of the capital fund but may at the discretion of Senate be applied in the payment of the Scholarship in subsequent years.

5. An applicant for the Scholarship shall be not more than 28 years of age and shall be -

(a) a student of the University enrolled in the third or fourth year of a Bachelor of Music course;
(b) a student of the Queensland Conservatorium of Music at a stage in the course which in the opinion of the Head of the School of Music is at least equivalent to the third year of the Bachelor of Music course; or
(c) a person granted a degree from the University or a degree or diploma from the Conservatorium.

6. Applications for the Scholarship shall be lodged on or before 7 July in a year in which the Scholarship is offered. In the application, a candidate shall give particulars of qualifications held, and shall furnish such details of the intended course of study, including, if required, evidence of eligibility, as the Head of the School of Music may require.

7. Each applicant shall submit a program for a short public recital to be sung at a competition to be arranged by the Head of the School of Music, the program to consist of a recitative and aria from an opera or oratorio, two Lieder of contrasting character, two mélodies of contrasting character, and two other vocal items from the English or Italian repertoire, all items to be sung in the languages of the composers' original settings.

8. The competition shall be judged by a panel consisting of the following persons -

(a) the Head of the School of Music or nominee;
(b) the Director of the Queensland Conservatorium of Music or nominee; and
(c) up to 3 persons who have no official connection with either the University or the Conservatorium to be nominated by the Head of the School of Music.

9. In awarding the Scholarship the panel shall take account of -

(a) the academic record;
(b) the vocal skills displayed in the public recital; and
(c) the proficiency in at least 2 European languages other than English, of each candidate and
shall submit to the Board of Studies in Music a report of its deliberations together with its recommendations.

10. A successful applicant shall submit to the Head of the School of Music such reports on their work as may be required, but in any case, at least one report every 6 months. Any change in the scholar's course of study must be approved by the Head.
