Dr Koji Matsunobu
PhD University of Illinois, PhD Tokyo Gakugei University, MA (Mus Ed) University of Hiroshima, BA (Piano Performance / Music Education) University of Hiroshima
Koji Matsunobu holds PhDs in music and arts education (conferred by Tokyo Gakugei University and the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign). Former Fulbright Graduate Scholar, he explored possibilities of incorporating non-Western ideas into Western contexts of education. His early training in piano and subsequent training on the shakuhachi allows him to create a liminal space in which his Japanese and Western selves negotiate with each other and thus provide a context of intercultural dialogues over human experiences of music.
His research interests include multicultural approaches to arts integration, indigenous knowledge production, spirituality in arts education, the pedagogy of world music traditions, and creativity. Recent work, documented in his dissertation (submitted to the University of Illinois), focuses on the interface among spirituality, ecology, and aesthetics in the context of shakuhachi practice. He has also ventured into exploring shared realms of music and art through the case of Japanese arts (documented in the National Art Educators Association’s New Anthology: Teaching Asian Art: Content, Context, and Pedagogy). His current project involves exploring the notion of creativity from an Eastern pedagogical perspective.
He was invited to join the organizing committee of the third International Congress of Qualitative Inquiry and lead a pre-conference meeting entitled “A Day in Japanese” in order to facilitate intercultural communication regarding critical issues of qualitative research between Japan and North America. He also serves as an advisory board member for the International Journal of Education and the Arts.
