Dr Katie Zhukov
PhD UNSW, MMus Julliard, BMus (Hons I) Adel

Dr Katie Zhukov began her musical education at the Special Music School for Gifted Children in Kharkov, Ukraine, and came to Australia as a teenager. She continued her studies at the Universities of Western Australia and Adelaide, graduating with First Class Honours from the Elder Conservatorium of Music. As a recipient of an ITT International Fellowship, Dr Zhukov spent two years at the Juilliard School of Music, New York, studying for her Masters degree in performance. Her PhD from the University of New South Wales in 2005 focused on instrumental pedagogy at the tertiary level. She had also completed the Graduate Certificate in Educational Studies (Higher Education) at the University of Sydney in 2008.

Dr Zhukov has established a reputation in Australia as a fine performer, educator and researcher. She have performed 8 concertos with professional and amateur orchestras, gave many solo and chamber music recitals, partnering Australia’s finest string players. Her interest in Australian piano music is evidenced by her two solo CDs: Ragtime, Dreams and Visions and Six Profiles of Australian women composers (Wirripang Publications, 2008 & 2010). Dr Zhukov is the editor and recording artist for the new Wirripang Australian Piano Anthology (2011) that provides recently composed Australian repertoire for piano students from beginner to advanced level. The Anthology is published in three books: Book One (Grade 1–4), Book Two (Grade 5-–7) and Book 3 (Grade 8 –Diploma).

Prior to being appointed as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Performance at the University of Queensland Dr Zhukov has taught a wide range of subjects at the Sydney, Queensland and Western Australian Conservatoriums. The excellence of her teaching was recognised by the Sydney Conservatorium Teaching Award in 2003.

She has published on instrumental music teaching in Music Education Research, Research Studies in Music Education, British Journal of Music Education, International Journal of Music Education and Australian Journal of Music Education and presented papers at ASME, ISME, ICMPC and APPC Conferences. Her other research interests lie in the area of teaching and learning and application of theories of teaching and learning to the music education setting.

Dr Zhukov is currently researching teaching of sight-reading to pianists. This project has been already supported by the University of Sydney Bridging Research Grant in 2008 and the University of Queensland Start Up Research Grant in 2009 and Early Career Researcher grant in 2010. The investigation focuses on teaching practices and student learning of this essential music skill and has the potential to transform instrumental music teaching in Australia and globally. It has engaged piano students from the University of Queensland, Queensland Conservatorium of Music, University of Southern Queensland and several high schools in experiments that have stimulated developmental trajectories in their music learning and benefited their music education and outcomes. The recent UniQuest Pathfinder grant (2011-2012) will be used to trial new piano sight-reading curriculum in four tertiary institutions.
