About the HEESP Project

This website is an outcome from a Higher Education Equity Support Program (HEESP) funded project called “Facilitating and Supporting Indigenous Students in the Transition from Undergraduate to Postgraduate Study” undertaken by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies Unit at The University of Queensland. The primary purpose of this research was to help remove barriers in the transition from undergraduate to postgraduate study for Indigenous Australian students. Drawing on interviews with past and present postgraduate students, the study explored ways in which The University of Queensland can encourage more Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to embark on postgraduate study and identify mechanisms to improve their retention and graduation rates. The project intended to increase the numbers of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students completing postgraduate degrees at UQ by providing information and support. We wish to thank the current Indigenous postgraduate students, completed Indigenous postgraduates and non-completed Indigenous postgraduate students who have generously given their time to participate in this project. Many thanks also to Monique Proud for her research assistance and the Higher Education Equity Support Program (HEESP) for generous funding support.
