The Division administers the Bachelor of Engineering (BE) in Materials Engineering and a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Materials Science.

The objectives of the Bachelor of Engineering (Materials) program are to produce graduates who will have:
  • a thorough understanding of the science and engineering of materials;
  • developed professional skills sufficient to advise on the analysis, use and development of engineering materials;
  • an appreciation for the role of engineering materials in the manufacturing, process and minerals industries;
  • an in-depth knowledge of materials processing and the light alloys;
  • an appreciation for and skills in mechanical design and an understanding of materials behaviour under load;
  • an appreciation for the fundamentals of chemical process engineering; and
  • an appreciation for the role of research.
The Bachelor of Engineering (Materials) provides students with a strong foundation in materials science and engineering through a series of core courses in fracture mechanics, materials selection, polymers, biomaterials and nanomaterials and the science and engineering of metals including phase transformations, and dislocation dynamics. The Division also provides a specialised course in solidification and the light metals, which is an area of research strength and which is also important in the state and federal context. The relationship to other disciplines and industrial sectors are developed through core courses in chemical and mechanical engineering.

It is strongly recommended that students pursue the Minor in Chemical Engineering.
