Research Assistant

Helen commenced work as a Research Assistant with Janet in 2000. She is an integral part of the scientific team in the UQ Dugong Program. Helen's duties include field sampling of dugongs, curation of data and biopsy samples, and organisation of field gear. Helen comes to UQ with a wealth of field experience working with large marine mammals. In the mid 1980s, Helen was a Scientific Officer on a northern hemisphere humpback whale program running out of Maui, Hawaii. She was responsible for collection of field data including photo ID, positional data, acoustic recordings and behavioural observations. Helen also completed an Honours program studying humpback whale behaviour during migration of the southern hemisphere Area V stock. She has also collaborated on research into the biology and ecology of platypus and silvereyes.

Research Interests

Her current research interests include all aspects of dugong ecology and behaviour but particularly social interactions, vocalisations and dugong poo.
