History of Training in the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences
As early as 1998, therapists from the School’s UQ Health and Rehabilitation Clinics have been conducting professional development for teachers using the literacy programs that have been developed in the School, and incorporating the content into classroom activities.
These workshops have included principals, learning support teachers, teachers, teacher aides, speech pathologists and occupational therapists. The workshops focus on the underlying theory, the skills required to run the programmes as isolated events and the skills to incorporate the principles flexibly into both the curriculum and classroom teaching for maximum benefit.
We believe that the workshops have provided a much-valued link between the work and body of knowledge that health professions have with the work and body of knowledge that education professionals have. The task of teaching children, we believe, is a shared responsibility.
Please take a moment to read the information at “About Literacy for Life” for more information on our work. You will find this on the left hand side of the homepage for www.uq.edu.au/literacyprograms.
