SCHOOL OF PHYSICAL SCIENCES Discipline of Mathematics

The School’s Statistics and Probability Group is in the Discipline of Mathematics in the School of Physical Sciences, which is to become the School of Mathematics and Physics from the beginning of 2009. The Group is the leading provider of statistical education in Queensland and is recognised internationally for its active and dynamic research programs across a number of areas of statistics and has research strengths in several areas including bioinformatics, biostatistics, computational statistics, discriminant and cluster analyses, experimental design, image analysis, machine learning, mixture modelling, multivariate analysis, and applied probability and stochastic processes. The Group has established ongoing collaborations with other disciplines, particularly in the biological and medical sciences, bioinformatics, engineering and information technology, as well as with industry and government bodies.

The role
The appointee will be expected to: teach in the School’s undergraduate and postgraduate programs in statistics, particularly to large first and second level undergraduate classes; provide Honours and higher degree supervision; maintain a strong research record.

The person
Applicants should possess a PhD in statistics, and have a strong publication record in statistics and a commitment to obtaining research funding, commensurate with career stage. Experience in the development and implementation of courses in statistics is desirable, and an ability to teach large classes is essential. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as the ability to interact effectively with staff and students are also essential.

Remuneration
This is a fixed term appointment for 5 years at Academic Level A or Level B. The remuneration package will be in the range of $60,391 - $64,827 (Level A) or $68,239 - $81,034 (Level B) p.a., plus employer superannuation contributions of 17%.
