UNION CELEBRATES REUNION DAY AT IPSWICH
The UQ Union will celebrate ReUnion Day at the Ipswich Campus tomorrow, Wednesday, 26 July from 11am-2pm. The event will include live music, a free barbecue and the Campus’ first Ipswich Idol Talent Quest! All staff and students are encouraged to enter the Ipswich Idol Talent Quest in the following categories: karaoke, singer/songwriter and bands. Prizes have been donated by the Raceview Tavern and winner of the best band or singer/songwriter competition will have the chance to perform at the Raceview Tavern on one of their student nights (every last Thursday of the month). Entry forms are available from the Union Office, Level 1, Building 8.
The Union’s new Resource Organiser, Gillian Brannigan, will also host an information table in the courtyard at lunch times most days to advertise the student services, events and activities run by the Union. Entry forms are also available from this location.
UPDATE FROM STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES
For semester 2, 2006 the staff of Student Support Services will be working at the Ipswich Campus for the following days:
- Learning Advisers, David Rowland on Tuesdays & Fridays (except for 25/8/06 & 1/9/06) & Kelly Matthews on Thursdays
- International Student Advisers, Julie O'Donohoe on Mondays & Tuesdays and Lynne Green on Wednesdays & Fridays
- Disability Adviser, Rhonda Watson on Wednesdays & for first 4 weeks of semester Anne Berquier on Thursdays
- Personal and Careers Counsellor, Diana Cogill from Monday to Friday.

CONTRIBUTION TO STUDENT LEARNING AWARDED
Dr Marie Kavanagh from the UQ Business School Ipswich has won a Carrick Institute Award for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning. Marie received $10,000 for leadership of a mentoring program that supports transition and collaborative learning for first year students at the Ipswich Campus, and engages students in the community. CAMPUS ENGAGES WITH SENIOR SCHOOL STUDENTS
Over 350 senior school students from South East Queensland visited the Ipswich Campus last week to engage in business. Hosted by the UQ Business School, the annual Engaging Business conference brings together teachers and year 11 and 12 students to learn about contemporary business issues. Now in its fourth year, Engaging Business welcomed 364 students from 31 schools to the UQ Ipswich Campus, 11 Salisbury Road, on Thursday, July 20 and Friday, July 21. NATIONAL SEMINARS ON ASSESSMENT IN BIOLOGICAL SCIENCE
Two one-day seminars, Enhancing Assessment in Biological Science, will be held at the University of Melbourne (7 December) and The University of Western Australia (12 December). No registration fee applies as both seminars are fully sponsored by The Carrick Institute for Learning and Teaching in Higher Education. VISITS TO THE IPSWICH CAMPUS

Toogoolawah State High School students will be visiting the campus to:
· explore career options,
· identify UQ Ipswich campus programs
· discuss alternative entry and UQ Link special entry scheme and
· UQ scholarships available.
Monday 31 July 2006 from 11am – 3pm
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students from Ipswich Boys Grammar will visit the campus to develop an understanding of higher education and programs offered at the Ipswich campus.
UQ BOILERHOUSE CONFERENCE LETS OFF STEAM
The second in the UQ Boilerhouse ‘Letting off Steam’ conference series will be held on Monday, 11 September at the Ipswich campus. Entitled ‘What is democracy: where are the people’, the conference will facilitate debate around the current state of democracy in Australia. Participants will have the opportunity to engage with prominent speakers, participate in facilitated discussions, share information and build collaborative networks.
Guest speakers at the conference will include Dr Steve Johnson who is an adjunct academic at Portland State University, Oregon where he lectures on civic engagement. Steve is working with the UQ Boilerhouse to develop a joint social sustainability project translating and comparing the Portland experience and learnings with the current SEQ situation.
