 UQ Ipswich welcomes Australian-first research

Released Tuesday, November 4, 2008

Research at The University of Queensland’s Ipswich Campus will be at the national forefront with today’s opening of The Centre of Excellence for Behaviour Support.

The Centre, based in the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences, was officially opened at the Ipswich Campus today, by Disability Services Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr.

An Australian-first initiated by the Queensland Government as a result of the report by Mr Justice Carter, the Centre is based in Building 28 at the Ipswich Campus and will attract $10.5 million in government funding over the next four years.

The new teaching and research centre will expand national and international knowledge of intellectual disabilities and severely challenging behaviours, and improve the skills of people working in the field.

Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Professor Alan Rix labelled the establishment of the research centre at UQ Ipswich as “testament” to the State Government’s and University’s commitment to the Campus and the Ipswich region.

He welcomed Disability Services Queensland to Campus and looked forward to supporting their research to build best practice in supporting people with an intellectual or cognitive disability and challenging behaviours.

“The Centre for Excellence for Behaviour Support is a welcome boost to the already thriving research profile at the UQ Ipswich Campus, joining our Healthy Communities Research Centre which was launched earlier this year, as well as the important social research undertaken by the UQ Boilerhouse Community Engagement Centre,” Professor Rix said.

“These Centres combine with our existing faculty-based research in areas such as business, social and behavioural sciences, health, cardio-respiratory medicine, whiplash, nursing and midwifery to define the UQ Ipswich Campus as a burgeoning hub for research excellence with practical, community-focused outcomes.

“Such is the commitment by The University of Queensland to bolster the research profile at the Ipswich Campus to ensure we provide the people of Ipswich and surrounding regions with the academic and research excellence for which UQ is internationally renowned.”

The Centre of Excellence for Behaviour Support was officially opened today, Tuesday, November 4, 2008. UQ’s School of Education Senior Lecturer Associate Professor Monica Cuskelly has been appointed as the interim director of the Centre.
