Scholarships Details

Established in 2008 and maintained by an annual gift from the late Dr Clem Jones, AO, and E.W. Jones, to encourage young people to take an interest in, and work in, local government.

1.   The scholarship is awarded annually by Senate on the recommendation of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor
      (the PVC).

2.   To assist in the selection process, the PVC must establish a selection committee, comprising - 
       (a)  the PVC, or nominee, as chair of the selection committee; and
       (b)  a representative of the School of Business; and
       (c)  a representative of the Ipswich City Council (the ICC).

3.   A student is an eligible applicant for the award of the scholarship in a year (the relevant year), if -
       (a)  in that year, the student -
              (i)   is a domestic student within the meaning of the Fee Rules; and
              (ii)  is enrolled full-time in Year 1 of one of the following programs -
                     (A)  the Bachelor of Business;
                     (B)  the Bachelor of Business Management;
                     (C)  a dual program including one of the programs referred to in rule (A) or (B); and
       (b)  the student graduated from Ipswich Grammar School in the year immediately before the
              relevant year.

4.   The scholarship is awarded, at the discretion of the selection committee, to the applicant showing
      greatest merit as demonstrated by -
       (a)  academic achievement in secondary school studies; and
       (b)  an interest in an area of business studies and in issues relating to local government; and
       (c)  personal qualities; and 
       (d)  other evidence that may be considered relevant by the selection committee to the future
              success in working in local government.

5.   Applications must be lodged with, and by the date set by the PVC.

6.   The scholarship may be held for up to 3 years, subject to satisfactory academic progress and
      continued full-time enrolment in the program.
      Satisfactory academic progress means maintaining a GPA of at least 5 each semester.

7.   If a recipient fails to maintain satisfactory academic progress, the recipient must show cause why
      the scholarship should not be cancelled, by the date which the PVC requests the recipient to do
      so.

8.   ICC may offer a recipient work experience for any period during the period in which the scholarship
      is held, determined by the ICC in consultation with the recipient.

9.   The value of the scholarship is $2,500 for each year for which it is held.

         (a)  the PVC, or nominee, as chair of the selection committee; and
         (b)  a representative of the Faculty of Science; and
         (c)  a representative of the Faculty of Engineering, Architecture and Information Technology.

3.  A student is an eligible applicant for the award of the scholarship in a year (the relevant year), if:
        (a)  in that year, the student -
                (i)   is a domestic student within the meaning of the Fee Rules; and
                (ii)  is enrolled full-time in Year 1 of one of the following programs -
                       (A)  the Bachelor of Science, majoring in mathematics;
                       (B)  the Bachelor of Engineering;
                       (C)  the Bachelor of Arts, majoring in mathematics;
                       (D)  the Bachelor of Education (Secondary), in the specialist teaching area
                               of mathematics;
                       (E)  the Bachelor of Education (Middle Years of Schooling), in the specialist teaching area
                               of mathematics;
                       (F)  a dual program including one of the programs referred to in rule (A), (B), (C), (D)
                               or (E); and
        (b)  the student graduated from Ipswich Grammar School in the year immediately before the
               relevant year.

4.  The scholarship is awarded, at the discretion of the selection committee, to the applicant showing
      greatest merit as demonstrated by -
       (a)  academic achievement in secondary school studies; and
       (b)  an interest in a career involving mathematics; and
       (c)  personal qualities; and 
       (d)  other evidence that may be considered relevant by the selection committee to the future
              success in working in the field of mathematics.

5.  Applications must be lodged with, and by the date set by the PVC.

6.  The Scholarship may be held for up to 3 years, subject to satisfactory academic progress and
     continued full-time enrolment in the program. 
     Satisfactory academic progress means maintaining a GPA of at least 5 each semester.

7.  If a recipient fails to maintain satisfactory academic progress, the recipient must show cause why
     the scholarship should not be cancelled, by the date which the PVC requests the recipient to do so.

8.  The value of the scholarship is $2,500 for each year for which it is held.

Established in 2005 in memory of Heather Bonner who brought indigenous and non-indigenous Australians together through her work with the One People of Australia League (OPAL). The Scholarship is maintained by an annual gift from the Ipswich Women’s Development Fund, a co-operative body established by women’s organisations in Ipswich to promote the achievements of women in the Ipswich community.
 
 
1.   The Scholarship is awarded annually by Senate on the recommendation of a selection committee
       consisting of
       (a)  the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (as chair of the committee); and
       (b)  at least one representative from the Ipswich Campus as nominated by the
              Pro-Vice-Chancellor; and 
       (c)  at least one representative from the Ipswich Women’s Development Fund.

2.   The Scholarship is open to female students who are enrolled as either full-time or part-time 
       students in an undergraduate degree program at the Ipswich Campus and who -
       (a)  are Australian citizens or permanent residents of Australia; and
       (b)  are currently residents of the Ipswich City as defined by the local government
              boundaries; and
       (c)  have completed at least one calendar year of study at the Ipswich Campus and are enrolled
              to study the subsequent year at that campus.

3.   The Scholarship is awarded to an eligible applicant showing the greatest merit as
       demonstrated by - 
       (a)  past academic achievement in the chosen field of study; or
       (b)  personal qualities, including contribution to the Ipswich community, commitment to
              social justice principles and/or bringing people from diverse backgrounds 
together; or
       (c)  leadership and communication skills; or
       (d)  other such evidence as may be deemed relevant to the professional success of the applicant.

4.   Indigenous students are encouraged to apply.

5.   The Scholarship is tenable for one year, subject to satisfactory academic progress and
      continued enrolment at the Ipswich Campus.

6.   The value of the Scholarship will be $5,000, payable in two semester installments.

7.   The Scholarship cannot be held concurrently with any other scholarship or bursary valued at more
      than $5,000 annually.

Established in 1999 and maintained by an annual gift of $5,000 from the Ipswich City Council to encourage undergraduate study at The University of Queensland, Ipswich Campus and to encourage educational development in skill shortage areas in the Ipswich region. The scholarship was formalised by Senate in 2008.

1.   The scholarship is awarded annually by Senate on the recommendation of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor
       (the PVC).

2.   To assist in the selection process, the PVC must establish a selection committee, comprising -
      (a)  the PVC or nominee (as chair of the selection committee); and
      (b)  an Ipswich Campus representative; and 
      (c)  a representative from the Ipswich City Council.

3.   The scholarship is open to students who -
      (a)  are domestic students as defined in the Fee Rules; and
      (b)  are currently residents of the Ipswich/Moreton region encompassing Ipswich City, Esk, Laidley
             and Boonah Shires; and
      (c)  are enrolled full-time; and
      (d)  intend to enter the second year of an undergraduate program at the Ipswich Campus in the
             year of the award.        

4.   The scholarship is awarded, at the discretion of the selection committee, to the applicant showing
      greatest merit as demonstrated by -
      (a)  academic achievement during the first 2 semesters of the applicant’s program; and
      (b)  personal qualities including leadership potential, community involvement, career
            aspirations,  presentation skills by contribution to the Ipswich community, commitment
             to social 
justice principles and/or bringing people from diverse backgrounds together; and 
      (c)  a personal statement, 500 words or less, demonstrating how the scholarshipfunds will benefit
             the applicant's future study; and       
      (d)  other evidence that may be considered relevant by the selection committee to the professional
             success of the applicant.

5.   Applications must be lodged with, and by the date set by the PVC.

6.   The scholarship is tenable for 1 year, subject to satisfactory academic progress and continued 
      full-time enrolment at the Ipswich Campus. Satisfactory academic progress means maintaining
      a GPA of at least 4 each semester.     

7.   If a recipient fails to maintain satisfactory academic progress, the recipient must show cause why
      the scholarship should not be cancelled, by the date which the PVC requests the recipient to do
      so.  


8.   Ipswich City Council may offer the recipient - 
      (a)  vacation placement; and
      (b)  ambassadorial roles, at sites and for periods during the duration of the scholarship
             determined by the Ipswich City Council in consultation with the recipient and the
             relevant Head of School.

9.   The scholarship must not be held concurrently with another similar scholarship.

10. The value of the scholarship is $5,000.

The bursary was established in 2000 and is maintained by an annual gift from the Edwards family of Ipswich. The bursary was formalised by the Senate in 2010. 
The rules for the scholarship are as follows.
 
1.  Definitions
     In these rules-
     bursary means a Reverend Roy Edwards Memorial Bursary in Leadership.
     PVC means the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the university.
     relevant program means one of the following programs currently offered at the university’s
        Ipswich campus-
          (a)  the Bachelor of Health Science;
          (b)  the Bachelor of Nursing;
          (c)  the Bachelor of Midwifery;
          (d)  the Bachelor of Paramedic Science;
          (e)  the Bachelor of Nursing / Bachelor of Midwifery.

2.  Purpose
     The purpose of the bursary is to encourage and assist meritorious students who are-
          (a)  residents of Ipswich City; and
          (b)  undertaking their third year of a relevant program; and
          (c)  display personal qualities, including leadership potential, communication and presentation
                 skills; and
          (d)  demonstrate strength of commitment to the Ipswich region.

3.  Value of bursary
     The value of the bursary is $2,000.
 
4.  Award of bursary
     The Senate may award one bursary to a student each year on the recommendation of the PVC,
     as a representative of the relevant selection committee established under subrule 6(1).
 
5.  Eligibility for award
      An applicant is eligible for the award of a bursary in a year, if-
          (a)  the applicant submits an application for the bursary to the PVC, by the closing date for
                 applications; and
          (b)   on the day when the applicant submits the application, the applicant-
               (i)   is an Australian citizen or a permanent resident of Australia; and
               (ii)   is a resident of Ipswich City; and
               (iii)  has completed 32 units of study in a relevant program; and
               (iv)  does not hold another scholarship or bursary valued at more than $5,000 a year.
 
6.  Selection process
     (1)  For the selection process for a year, the PVC must establish a selection committee, comprising-
          (a)   the PVC, or nominee, as chair of the committee; and
          (b)   at least one member of the university's academic staff based at the Ipswich Campus,
                  nominated by the PVC; and 
          (c)   at least one representative from the Edwards family, or nominee, with university staff
                  comprising the majority.
 
     (2)  The selection committee must rank the eligible applicants consecutively in order of merit, based
            on, for  each applicant--
          (a)  the standard of the applicant's academic achievement in courses that the applicant has
                 undertaken in a relevant program; and
          (b)  the applicant's personal qualities, including leadership potential and communication and
                 presentation skills; and
          (c)  the strength of the commitment that the applicant demonstrates to the Ipswich region; and
          (d)  any other matter that the selection committee considers to be relevant to the applicant's
                 future professional success.

     (3)  If the selection committee is satisfied that at least 1 eligible applicant is of sufficient merit to
            warrant the award of the bursary, the selection committee must recommend that the bursary
            be awarded to the applicant with the highest ranking.

7.  Conditions for bursary
     The recipient of a bursary holds the bursary for a year, subject to the recipient, during that time-
          (a) continuing to be an Australian citizen or a permanent resident of Australia; and
          (b) continuing to be a resident of Ipswich City; and
          (c) continuing to be enrolled full-time in a relevant program; and
          (d) gaining a GPA of more than 5.00 for each semester of study that the recipient
                undertakes; and
          (e) not holding another scholarship or bursary valued atmore than $5,000 a year.

       (a)  Head, School of Nursing and Midwifery (the Head) (as chair of the committee); and
       (b)  at least 2 representatives from the Ipswich campus as nominated by the Pro-Vice-Chancellor
       and;
       (c)  3 representatives from the Ipswich RSLA Sub Branch. 

2.   The scholarship is open to students who - 
       (a)  are domestic students as defined in the Fee Rules; and
       (b)  are about to enter the second year or honours year of the Bachelor of Nursing; and
       (c)  have a family line to a War Veteran or ex-service person or serving person; and
       (d)  are able to demonstrate financial need; and
       (e)  are preferably current residents of the Ipswich/Moreton region encompassing Ipswich City,
              Esk, Laidley and Boonah Shires.
 
3.   The scholarship is awarded to the applicant showing the greatest merit as demonstrated by -
       (a)  academic achievement in their program to date; and
       (b)  personal qualities including community involvement, career aspirations, leadership and
              presentation skills; and
       (c)  such other evidence as may be deemed relevant to future success in the nursing profession.
 
4.   Applications must be lodged in the year of the award by the date set by the Head. 

5.   The value of the scholarship is $5,000 for one year. 

6.   The scholarship cannot be held concurrently with another scholarship or award valued at more
       than $5,000 per annum. 

7.   The recipient may be offered vacation placement in a health care facility nominated by the
       Ipswich RSLA Sub Branch.
