The University provides an integrated, professional service in several key support areas.
A range of free and confidential facilities is available to UQ students at each campus. In addition to individual sessions, Student Services runs an extensive program of group seminars and workshops.
- Careers counselling and graduate employment
Careers advisors prepare students for a successful transition from study to employment. Advisors help students make informed decisions on careers and related program choices consistent with their interests and abilities. They also provide practical advice and assistance in how to prepare for and get that first job.
- Personal counselling
Personal counsellors are available to assist students with a wide range of issues, including dealing with crises, relationship problems and adjusting to University life. UQ counselors are trained qualified professionals who work to a strict Code of Ethics, which means they must inform students of the limits of confidentiality. Everything students say is kept confidential to the counseling service unless there is clear evidence someone may be at a severe risk. Student Services also offers an online counseling service for students to access.
- Disability support
The University is committed to accessibility in teaching, learning and the physical environment and a number of facilities and services are available. Students with a disability should contact a Disability Advisor the year before they intend to commence studies at UQ. This allows the nature of the disability and the proposed program to be considered, and gives time for materials and other requirements to be prepared.
- Learning assistance
Learning advisors assist students to improve their learning skills and effi ciency. Consultations are available on a wide range of topics, including preparation for exams, structuring theses, tackling assignments, getting more out of lectures, and time management. Workshops offered throughout the semesters include assignment writing, reading researching and note taking, exam preparation, group work and tertiary preparation courses. Workshops are run for one hour and there is no need for students to book.
- International Student Advisors
International Student Advisors provide a range of services and assistance for international students from pre-arrival to departure. Staff can also advise on a wide range of University and community services. Information about the cost of living in Australia and how to manage on limited incomes is also available.Programs such as Getting Started provide international students with all the information they need to make a smooth adjustment into life at UQ. The program addresses issues such as enrolment, public transport, student ID cards, banking and more. Students Services also offers programs such as mates@uq which is a great opportunity for international students to make friends and interact with domestic students in a social environment
- Postgraduate Support
UQ Student Services offers assistance specifically targeted to postgraduate students by providing workshops such as thesis writing, conceptualizing a research project, literature review and information on research policy.
