At UQ, a postgraduate student (or a postgrad) is someone who has already completed an undergraduate or first degree. An Honours degree is an undergraduate degree, so Honours students are not identified as postgraduates.

- Includes Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma, Masters and Professional Doctorate
- Administered by UQ's faculties

| Research programs |
- Research degrees at UQ are known as Research Higher Degrees, abbreviated to RHD
- Administered by the UQ Graduate School
- There are two types of postgraduate research higher degrees:
- Master of Philosophy (MPhil); and
- Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).
