Disposing of unwanted household items and other things
- Advertise in the UQ Union classifieds to sell your unwanted furniture, electrical items, textbooks, computer, car etc.
- Put For Sale notices on University bulletin boards or notice boards in shopping centres. Check them regularly to be sure they have not been covered over
- Several friends may want to get together and have a Garage Sale. It is worth advertising garage sales, and the local newspaper / The Courier Mail are good places to advertise. Be prepared for people to phone or come by from very early in the morning (5 or 5.30 am), and Second Hand Shop owners often are the earliest customers. Be prepared to bargain. Be security conscious and have a friend there with you. Hold garage sales outside under cover. Do not let strangers into your home. Try not to leave your goods unattended.
- For larger items of furniture, you may want to try to sell them through the Trading Post, your local newspaper, Southside News or The Courier Mail newspaper. Be aware that newspaper advertising means strangers will phone your home at all hours.
- Sell things at weekend markets, eg the Community Markets – Davies Park, West End, or have a stall at the Student Union Market Day on Wednesday at the St Lucia campus.
- Some second hand dealers and businesses will buy your furniture and household items. Check the Yellow pages under second hand dealers. You will usually get less for your items if you sell them to a second hand shop, however there is less organisation and hassle involved
- Unsold but clean and usable items may be donated to charities. Charity shops such as St Vincent de Paul, Goodwill Services, Salvation Army etc may collect larger items from your house for no charge. Check the Yellow pages under Charities and Charitable organisations.
